We all know that feeling of the first week, constant 0-60 runs, doing our best low-rider impression with the air suspension, and showing off the frunk and Gear Tunnel to strangers in parking lots.

But I'm curious about the long haul.

Now that the new-truck smell has faded into "adventure" smell, what has actually surprised you most about living with this thing every day?

Some of the things we hear most often are:
  • How quiet long trips are
  • How quickly torque becomes normal
  • How often people STILL get stopped and asked about it (“I know it’s a Rivian, but who makes it?”)
  • How capable it is in situations they didn’t expect
Sometimes the biggest surprises come after the honeymoon phase.

What surprised you?

I've never had an EV before, so the biggest surprise is "No more heading to the gas station!" Just plug 'er in from the garage. Also, automatic unlocking and locking, not even push to start!

This being my first EV, my aha moment came when I realized the whole refuel protocol was totally different from that used with an ICEV. Instead of always filling up at each refuel stop (who doesn’t fill their ICEV to the brim at each stop), with the EV you just need to put in what you need to reach your next recharge destination. And, if you have a home charger (your virtual gas station) and your destination is home, well sweeeet! Almost nobody has a real gas station at their home 😛

For me I'm reminded how bad the suspension really is compared to my other car, same with wind noise and missing the finer luxury details.

I justify it by reminding myself it's pretty awesome for a pickup truck and no other truck offers a better package.

I like that I can use my R1T as a truck... and when joining fast moving traffic, I can just punch it and join in like I belonged there.. :like:

Man I'm always going to the gas station on long trips. Charging stations don't have windshield squeegees!

Windshield cleaning fluid, squeegee, and paper towels in the frunk.

Problem solved!

Good idea. But then we won't have any of those "What's wrong with this picture" moments that confuse ICE owners ;)
