Apples and oranges. G2 R1 is not lidar. It’s just another bridge.
My point was that it is not true that non Lidar vehicles will be ugly ducklings in the used market. Some people over estimate the appeal of L4 autonomy (L3 is ok with current hardware and L4 is many years away).

Well that might be true. Good point.

People are too fixated on the next new thing and think Lidar and RAP1 are suddenly going to make the R1 made in 2026 obsolete which is just FUD.
Development on Gen 1 R1 autonomy stopped immediately after Gen 2 dropped. I just don’t know how you can see them break all their Gen 1 autonomy promises and halt all development on that platform only a couple years after it came out and still think there's zero chance of the same thing happening again on R2, especially when there are obvious flags being raised.

It's not the lidar I'm waiting for or the distant promise of L4 autonomy, it's the fact that they're planning to completely change the entire compute platform again and the last time that happened the old platform got unceremoniously taken out back and shot with no upgrade path or even an apology.

I sincerely hope they learned their lesson and won't do the same thing again, but it's a "fool me twice, shame on me" situation now - that's all.

Agreed. I think the compute power increase and change of architecture arguably have more significance. Maxi-Me just officially flushed HW3, and it wasn't because his jellybeans don't have LIDAR. And any compute architecture switch is pretty much always just the first notice of software EOL (still years away I should hope, and certainly further out than a typical car lease sunset, but fewer years than for the new chips).

They have promised the improvements on autonomy this year before ADAS version 3 with RAP1 and LiDAR comes out next year. So we will see if they meet commitments, which with autonomy day late last year is much more visible.

To each his own but in Tesla terms this is equivalent to buying a HW3 Tesla (deprecated) when the new hardwares confirmed release date is before end of year in R2s. This isn’t a small jump from Gen2 to Gen3 and it’s certainly not just “add LIDAR”. It’s a massive leap in computing power and camera resolution, which we learned from Tesla are the main constraints. Rivian is the benefit of Tesla’s learning curve. To just say “it doesn’t matter” is insane IMO. I’ll wait 6 more months.

It is not “insane” to say it doesn’t matter (much). First because a lot of people don’t care too much for autonomy beyond what is already available (as shown by take rate for FSD and many other manufacturers not doing much more than Rivian (eg Toyota) and still selling well) and secondly because the current version 2 ADAS can go to Level 3 with hands off and eyes off (at least for highway). RJ in recent interviews said L4 (which is what RAP1 and lidar is for primarily) would be late 2020s to early 2030s and given the may companies are trying and not getting their yet I would bet on early 2030s which means five plus years - hence not insane to not be obsessed with RAP1 and to get the advantages of the launch edition.

As for chasing the latest thing RAP2 could easily come out a couple of years later - should people wait for that?? /s

Well we are on a Rivian enthusiast forum here, not at a dealership where some regular Joe is buying a Toyota. Two completely different consumers. Regardless, I think you missed the point I was making. Rivian is the lucky beneficiary Tesla's mistakes. It is far more obvious now the compute and camera requirements needed for L3/L4 than it was even 3 years ago. So Gen3 RAP1 is already spec'd way higher than Tesla's AI4, so it will be able to handle L3/L4 and then they'll iterate on the "march of 9's" from there with RAP2, etc.

There are also many people from what I've read who are disappointed in the colors and lack of coastal cloud interior at launch. So why not just wait 6 months or so? It's just very confusing to me the people that seem to NEED the launch edition. If you're not an influencer than what's the rush? There are no "advantages" of the launch edition I see unless you really love launch green paint lol.

Additionally, it seems lots of Gen1 R1 owners are very upset with how much better the Gen2 R1's are and they feel left out on the updates, etc. So it's pretty easy to see in 1-2 years the R2 LE owners will feel the same way. If you are very wealthy and plan to dump the LE in 2-3 years anyways, then by all means please carry on and ignore what I'm saying.

Yes, there will always be iterations and new tech, etc. but if you know the new tech is coming in 6 months why would you want to feel deprecated already right after you bought a new car? Maybe that's just me so to each his own as I said earlier...

I'm happy to get Autonomy+ bundled in the LE at no additional cost and reevaluate if it's worth paying for in my next car when Level 4 is legal and proves useful.

To me, that's the real question—when will Level 4 be permitted by law, what will it do to insurance rates and legal liability, when will it be fool proof, when will it be a truly working option to use?

In the meantime, I probably wouldn't want to pay for Level 2+ or even Level 3, but it'll be a really cool novelty if it comes with the car, and—who knows?–might turn into something I really appreciate.

But that's just me—even if there are real capability differences that Gen 3 unlocks in th next few years that Gen 2 can't compute, I'll be happy with what I have, because it was free and let me try out a nicely high level of autonomy.

I agree with a lot of what you say.
Some people are not waiting because they want the new things, others are not waiting because it will cost thousands more from a reduced trade in value and then the need to pay $2.6k (or more?) for autonomy plus so there is a financial reason to buy now if L4 autonomy sometime in the next five years matters to you.

I agree this is an enthusiasts site but Rivian will within the next couple of years move in to the mainstream sales wise and the “average” buyer is very much a Toyota buyer. Therefore autonomy does not matter to a huge slice of the buying public.

I probably just feel that way bc I've own(ed) Tesla's in the past and have seen how this game goes. Maybe the word "insane" was too strong of wording in my original post :D

That's most interesting to me as well because we've always been able to beat the technological challenges when need be, but will actual use be held back by outdated laws and insurance? It could also come down to a situation where only the vehicle manufacturer (or their insurance partner) will insure their own level 4 vehicles and others like Allstate, Geico, etc.. won't touch them?

Where I live (rural-ish Northern NJ) I think it's going to be a long time (2035+) before I see any real usability with Level 4.

But if you're in an urban area in a sunny state that permits Level 4 now, I'm sure you'll get use out of it much sooner (as soon as the insurance and liability bits get worked out).

RJ in recent interviews said L4 [...] would be late 2020s to early 2030s and [...] I would bet on early 2030s which means five plus years - hence not insane to not be obsessed with RAP1 and to get the advantages of the launch edition.

You can't have it both ways my man; either L4 is coming soon and you better get your launch edition ASAP for the free lifetime autonomy perk, or it's not coming for 5+ years so anything related to autonomy doesn't matter that much. You're trying to argue both sides of the coin here.

Any position on the value of the free lifetime autonomy+ perk is somewhat spurious right now anyway since there is no guarantee of future pricing or performance. They may increase the price, they may decrease it, they may discontinue the whole thing. In fact there's no guarantee they won't just change the name again like they did with Driver+ and say "your Autonomy+ is free for life! But if you want the latest Adventure+ self-driving features you have to pay the new Adventure+ subscription like everyone else" - exactly like they did two years ago the last time there was an autonomy platform change.

If you're banking on the fact that RJ promised point to point on the Gen 2 platform before the end of this year I'd caution you to go back and listen to everything RJ promised Gen 1 buyers before abandoning that platform. At the end of the day the only way they can break the stigma that comes from their abandonment of the Gen 1 autonomy platform for Gen 2 is by not abandoning the Gen 2 platform when they release Gen 3, but there's no way for us to know until it happens and no real evidence to suggest it will go one way or the other, aside from RJ's (heretofore) empty promises. As is always the case - buy it for what it can do today, because it might not ever get more features.
