I don't have to worry any longer. Seems that my cover is now on the roadside somewhere. I am sure it was user error, but now I have a bumper step in the hitch and no longer need to worry about screwdrivers, tools, or getting under the truck just to put on and take off that cover.

or 3d print the ones with a knob and replace the stock ones
Yea, I have the twist lock knobs and like those, very easy to put on/off. I'm surprised Rivian didn't go with that from the factory.

For those who keep the hitch in all the time, I wish we were like other countries and it was against the law to do that. Basically just increasing damage and the possibility of injury from minor accidents because of laziness, to be a jerk to others on the road with you with the threat of injury/damage, or to cosplay as a truck driver

Yeah - I may be a jerk, but I was having all kinds of user errors taking that cover on and off. I could not do it without getting on my back to do it. I do not keep a hitch on unless I am using it, but the bumper step is so much more convenient (and much less expensive to replace!) and useful. The person that hits me from behind and is at fault be damned.

Or…don’t rear end someone with a hitch installed?

Mine is never on....hitch is always attached....
Same. I have never driven my R1T with the cover. I removed it immediately upon delivery, and it has been sitting in a cabinet in the garage ever since.
