I spotted my first Rivian in the wild today! I passed by and literally had to do a u-turn and come back for a closer look. I had places to be so it was just a quick stop for photos (plus it was in a golf club's parking lot), but I do have to say it looked amazing, and I was impressed by how...
As someone who has built two EV conversions and had failures in traffic, I figured I would offer a few theories on the potential failure based on how you described it.
A disclaimer first: I'm not an electric engineer or a vehicle engineer. I'm just a lunatic that can't leave well enough alone...
Based on the Car and Driver video about the Silverado, a) there is no trans tunnel in the Silverado E, its just storage (they specifically mentioned it) and b) the Silverado is a brand new chassis (shared with Hummer), while the F-150 is an ICE chassis that's been modified.
Not that I've seen. Disappointingly, it seems that the entire southeast has not received much attention from Rivian, especially when it comes to physical locations.
However, my best guess would be in Charlotte.
The "Did I tell you about that?" seems to perfectly fit his personality (at least what we've seen reported). He is so excited about the launch that he can't remember if he let slip what they are working on.
In talking with MotorTrend, RJ appeared to accidentally confirm the R1X is up next. Relevant section is below, but lots of other good info in the article.
Rivian Might Build an Electric Jeep Wrangler Fighter (motortrend.com)
Here's my take:
We know Rivian has two goals in mind when selecting a date for first customer deliveries (assuming all regulatory stuff has been addressed)
- Delivering in the month of September
- Making a large, positive, splash in both automotive and main stream media.
We also know that MT...
GM's lawyers are too busy suing Ford for using "cruise". And Ford's are too busy counter-suing over GM trademarking SuperCruise.
And based on their products and marketing, Dodge's lawyers are clearly tied up in a back room somewhere.
MotorTrend has an answer from the chief engineer on Tank Turn. Short version, its super complicated to code and they are more worried about delivering the vehicles than finishing the work on a party trick. They do intend to finish it someday.
Why Rivian’s "Tank Turn" Stationary Spin Feature...
The question becomes if Rivian geofences the feature, how do they handle that? Locking it out entirely prevents the 180, attempting to lock to 180 presents other problems (stopping suddenly on soft sand is a guaranteed method to get stuck) There's not a great answer other than leaving it...
Based on my understanding, if they write the restriction into the warranty (as that Big3 manufacturer did) then they are in compliance with federal law. Not a lawyer, just my understanding.
Regarding tank turn, acceptable areas are really going to vary across the county. I'd love to use it on the beach in NC, but that gets into a gray area. The local ordinance prohibits "driving in a repeated circular motion (aka doughnuts)". Does tank turn count? its not a doughnut persay but...
This varies manufacturer to manufacturer. If I remember correctly, FCA/Dodge/Stellantis were outliers when they said they'd cover damage when drag racing the Challenger. Again, based on my memory at the time of the Hellcat/Demon launch, one of the other Detroit automakers explicitly said they...
1: Its not clear what the exact timeline for the Amazon vans is, and whether delays have or will occur.
2: A delivery van requires far fewer chips than a luxury truck. No window motors, no entertainment systems, etc. A few chips in the inverter, a few in the navigation, a few in...
Communication and coding are not my forte, but as I understand it, there is a "open source" protocol for CCS, but it is effectively open in name only, and is far more complex than CHADEMO. Again, as I understand it, CHADEMO effectively uses the same CANBus protocol as the rest of the car, but...
As the open source/EV conversion community has been finding out, (openinverter.org), this is an absolute pain. My hat's off to Damien who is doing the work, because it seems each brand of CCS station has the communication timed slightly differently and that causes issues. Not to mention that...
I just want to second this. I work in the architecture and design industry, and the number of permit delays, especially in areas that were locked down longer (i.e. the west coast) is astounding. We consulted on a fairly simple housing project, no rezoning, which has now been stuck in the...
