There was no tailwind. One does not get to 2.8m/kw on a tailwind.
Mythbusters did a whole segment on drafting. 100 feet behind a truck, one gets between a 10 and 15 percent improvement. Driver + set to the minimum safe distance is about 100 feet.
We drove up from DC to NYC last night and had a real range surprise- in a positive way - with our R1S. The key seems to have been setting Drive + and drafting behind a truck most of the way.
Our average efficiency was 2.45/m, in 45 degree temperatures at highway speeds (65). But for those...
I agree - I threw in the Mach E stats to avoid being accused of exaggeration.
But again, it puts Rivian's accomplishment in perspective to see that Ford was only able to churn out about 40k Mach Es.
My post was triggered by all the negative press of late about Rivian and its challenges...
The key point to me isn't necessarily that Rivian is "winning" but that it is very much in the game against the established incumbents, even with the supply chain challenges everyone faced.
Rivian does not break out its sales by model. My understanding is that the EDV sales were very limited.
Per Rivian:
2022 Production: 24,337 (up from 1,015 in 2021)
2022 Deliveries: 20,332 (up from 920 in 2021)
Looking at production statistics for EV SUVs and trucks in the US last year, compared to the non-Tesla incumbents, the significance of Rivian's accomplishment seems greatly underappreciated in the popular press. Rivian was very much in the game.
Rivian, a start-up, hit its 2022 target of...
I had the same thing happen early on with my R1S. Turtle warnings etc. It turned out to be one bad cell but necessitated a complete pack replacement. It took a week, soup to nuts. It was annoying but the service center in Richmond VA (I live in MD) was top notch and very communicative...
I drove it in sport mode today- in some ways the improvement in ride is even more noticeable. It is tied down but the damping is noticeably better, much less harshness.
After loading the new software update, I was struck by the major change in the ride of my R1S. It is much smoother and more compliant at low speeds with no change in the excellent handling.
The porpoising that some have complained about in the R1S also seems largely to have gone away. I...
Stepping back, big picture, after six weeks with this thing: this car is the absolute bomb.
I've owned the pricey Germans, various Japanese brands.
But after six weeks I still get out of my R1S, look back at the thing as I walk away, and think to myself, wow. This car is amazing.
So...
Interesting thoughts all. It is very intermittent. I do sometimes hear it when stationary. The idea that it may relate to the audio system is Interesting. But when I alter music settings it makes no difference. The sound is also present when the stereo is off or on.
Noise is subjective, but the sound of the electric motors is really very muted. It is mainly noticeable, to the extent that it is, when you are coming to a stop or accelerating. When at a constant speed I cannot hear any motor noise. I have an R1S built in August 2022
The air suspension...
I intermittently experience a strange subsonic ear buffeting sensation in my R1S. It can be quite uncomfortable. It feels similar to having a sunroof open (not in a Rivian obviously) at speed with no side windows open.
Initially I thought it was due to high air pressure given the almost...
"Winter" such as it is in the DC area made an early appearance over the past week or so. That means highs in the mid-upper 40s, lows in mid 20s to 30 or so. This was an opportunity to see the cool weather efficiency hit on the battery.
I commute from Potomac MD to downtown DC and back every...
