  1. Quad motor vs locking diff

lol. glad you think so. please procure life insurance if you ever plan to drive across a sloped surface with a cliff drop-off, like the OP has in his property...
  2. Quad motor vs locking diff

Okay... the words "locking diff" imply a device that has three key features (which you seem to ignore): (1) it is a differential (2) it can be opened (3) it can be locked The OP repeatedly lamented the lack of a "locking" diff, for all three features. Not just a locked diff. Not just an open...
  3. Quad motor vs locking diff

Actually no. In the case we have been discussing, we want power to the wheels with the least traction. We are trying to protect the reserve of static friction that the downhill wheels have (so they can protect us from sliding down the hill), so do NOT want to direct any power to them. As I'm...
  4. Quad motor vs locking diff

I tell all my companies that when possible, to let physics do all the hard work. When you can, choose to run downhill, rather than climbing uphill. Physics is a wonderful force multiplier. Just because I could design a robot to pull up my pants, it doesn't t mean it is a good idea.
  5. Quad motor vs locking diff

To a certain extent, it depends on the allocation of the trucks weight among the different tires. The truck starts slipping on one tire and then breaks away. Also, the heavier vehicle could actually cause the ice surface to melt under the tire and lower the mu even more. There is a lot at play here.
  6. Quad motor vs locking diff

And btw, some other posters have seen similar behavior on-road in snowy conditions with lots of camber. Snow mode may have helped some of that, but I don’t know. I have been quite public about my fear of a 7000lb vehicle on icy highways at close-to highway speeds, especially if regen can’t be...
  7. Quad motor vs locking diff

@RIP I need to complete the math, but I think part of the issue with the Rivian on negative camber with low mu surface is that the center of gravity is lower (due to battery tray). This essentially puts more of the weight on the uphill tires than you would get on a higher CG vehicle. A higher...
  8. Started the 8 steps and am getting cold feet. Edit: warm fuzzies now, completed the steps :)

I did the same, and then I think they called me (although I can’t remember whether I initiated the call, or if they asked for the call). I changed my status on the call.
  9. Started the 8 steps and am getting cold feet. Edit: warm fuzzies now, completed the steps :)

No problems at all. You get to keep your pricing and just enter a “not ready” status. Can reinstate your position in line anytime, apparently.
  10. Started the 8 steps and am getting cold feet. Edit: warm fuzzies now, completed the steps :)

I may have mistyped, but the actual delivery would have been in Jan (although I was supposed to start the 8 step process in Nov). I had previously forgotten to request the “confirmation of order” back in August, so have to accept the new rules. But I do have pre-March pricing.
  11. Started the 8 steps and am getting cold feet. Edit: warm fuzzies now, completed the steps :)

I think the right choice depends a lot on your personal use case. I decided to delay delivery of my R1T from Nov 22 until sometime in 2023 because I’m still not sure if it is the right fit for my particular needs. I live in Brooklyn, work from home and only need a vehicle to drive 250 miles...
  12. Experienced Winter Ice Buildup Issues

Really? I drive up I-87 almost every weekend, and have been checking for DC fast chargers as I pass each service station, and have seen almost none north of Saratoga. This would be GREAT news for me, but I haven't seen evidence yet. Thanks for the info if this is true... great news!
  13. Experienced Winter Ice Buildup Issues

Not that I have seen (was there picking up our passes last weekend). In fact I have decided not to take delivery of my R1T until the charging infrastructure gets built out north of Saratoga. Right now the charging options along I-87 are VERY limited, and our lake/ski house near Gore is 245...
  14. Initial Winter Driving on Snow -- Experience in R1T on 20" AT

As I have said on another thread I started about this very issue, my fear is hitting a patch of black ice on the highway (particularly I-87 in the mountains, especially in wind/snow) and having one of those heart-stopping moments where it is impossible not to lift your foot entirely by instinct...
  15. Had my First Drive... very impressed, but will now almost certainly cancel my pre-order.

This is really well laid out, and is precisely what I have been wondering about. And although some of my other posts perhaps paint a picture of a reckless driver, I am in fact super cautious. My white-knuckle moments have all come when the road conditions have rapidly and temporarily changed...
  16. Had my First Drive... very impressed, but will now almost certainly cancel my pre-order.

I have 35" KO2's on the Rubicon, which are triple-peak snowflake, but not dedicated snow tires. However, in general the Jeep is actually pretty good (in terms of snow) on I-87. But driving 4 hours on a highway in a Jeep is no fun in general, and ideally I want to leave her at my house up in...
  17. Had my First Drive... very impressed, but will now almost certainly cancel my pre-order.

It's the most lovable and hilarious vehicle I have ever owned or ridden in. Totally unsafe at speed, a handful if driven spiritedly, but just wild fun. And being a jeep, imminently upgradeable. My Sunday plans are to install a new bumper and some trail lights...
  18. Had my First Drive... very impressed, but will now almost certainly cancel my pre-order.

Sadly (for me), that is kind of where my head is at too. Maybe a Grand Cherokee Trailhawk, but yes, something like that. I may change my mind again before 1Q23 when I would have to actually commit. Until then I can enjoy wheeling in the Blubicon, with the top down and the hemi roaring!
  19. Had my First Drive... very impressed, but will now almost certainly cancel my pre-order.

Great response, thank you. My house is near Gore and we have season tix so maybe we might see you there next year... Your comment on the regen is exactly my fear. When things suddenly get squirrely, how will I have the mind-power not to lift totally and jump on the brake? Lifting (and the...
  20. Had my First Drive... very impressed, but will now almost certainly cancel my pre-order.

Thank you to everyone who has commented already. The responses have been really informative and very helpful. I guess I will wait until nearer my delivery date (Q1 2023) and decide then. And maybe I will get a chance to take another drive before that time to alleviate my fears!
