With the announced massive price hike my LE R1S is now around $120K in CAD.
A BMW iX M60 starts at $122K CAD.
I'm undecided on whether I'll cancel my reservation on the R1S, but the bimmer is no longer the "expensive choice".
Availability might be the deciding factor.
I have a 2017 S75D and the R1S is high on my list.
Totally agree with you regarding the yoke in the new S, and the quality issues. Really unfortunate considering how amazing their new motor is (near peak power all the way to vehicle top speed).
Having said that there are also other contenders...
OK since nobody has posted the energy numbers yet here's a quick calculation comparing energy use between the Rivian and a traditional ICE pickup (using numbers for a Tundra taken from a recent TFL IKE challenge).
The Rivian used 16% of battery. Assuming 125kwh available (taken from another...
Yes I saw that. Interesting analysis.
However the test with the Tesla was more of a scientific experiment, as the driver wanted to test out traveling with CCS charging. By going through V3 SuperChargers the charge time would have reduced significantly.
And here's the main issue. Most...
That 20-80% in 41mins is definitely much slower than everyone would expect. Hopefully some OTA updates will improve this.
Just for comparison I looked at some of my charging sessions in my 5 year old S75D, which is far from the fastest charging car out there. A 13-70% (+57%) charge took 32...
Currently this vehicle is at the top on my list (ahead of the R1S LE reservation I have).
Waiting to see the charging curve of the R1S (R1T) to see whether this will change. I know the iX 50 does go below 100kw around 73% SOC, which might seem relatively weak, but efficiency is much better...
I'm in the same situation as you. My current EV definitely doesn't charge as fast as I would like, based on a lot of roadtrips and thousands of miles accumulated.
The charge curve might be a deal breaker for me as well.
I personally don't mind Rivian not providing that info, considering the truck has been delivered since last september anyway. What I mean here is that this is the kind of info that would have been useful prior to the vehicle being delivered.
What is totally abnormal is not seeing any charge...
Just adding to my own post here as I found the following test data for an Audi RS Q8 (on Car and Driver website),
C/D TEST RESULTS
60 mph: 3.2 sec
100 mph: 8.1 sec
1/4-Mile: 11.6 sec @ 119 mph
So, an identical 0-100mph time as the R1T with the 21 in tires. And identical 1/4 mile time (still...
Just read an article on Motortrend about the R1T (https://www.motortrend.com/news/2021-rivian-r1t-pros-and-cons-review/).
For the first time I saw a 0-100mph number posted. 8.1 sec with the 21" tires, 8.2 sec for the all terrain.
I seem to remember when the R1T/S were unveiled, the spec was 7...
Quick question on the noise aspect: what was the tire noise like at such speeds? (or at least from 60mph up)
On my Tesla S I'm certainly more annoyed by tire noise than wind noise.
A BMW iX would be a good option also, provided you don't mind the front of the vehicle. Apparently uber silent, quite powerful (516hp; possibly faster than the R1S above 60mph) and fairly efficient with over 300mi of range.
I might even cancel my R1S LE reservation, depending on the Rivian...
I also have a R1S reservation (LE). But right next to it, as my possible next vehicle, is the BMW iX.
Now I understand that some people don't like the front end of the iX, but spec wise it's a strong competitor in my opinion. Luxurious, super silent (probably more so than the R1S) and at...
I liked the fact that he evaluated the truck more "on road" than "off road" (and really liked it), as this is how I plan to drive my LE R1S also.
One concern though is the charging speed. Hopefully they'll sort the bugs out before release.
Indeed from a specs (and price) point of view the Air Touring seems like a good car to add to the list, but the styling doesn't really inspires me. And I have a feeling we might not see it until 2023 here in Canada.
OK I might be the only one in the world, but I currently have an "old" 2017 model S75D. And my shortlist (I change next yeay) currently consists of:
- New 2021 model S LR
- Rivian R1S (I'm a LE reservation holder)
- BMW iX xDrive50
I mention R1S as the OP was taking about the "R1" vehicles...
