  1. R2 Delayed?

Not only that, but they massively de-risked the R2 platform by being a bit conservative. Uses 400 volt system. Factory in Illinois instead of launching in Georgia. Pilot plant in California to work out any bugs. My only concern is quality control with this being their 1st high volume...
  2. Rival: 2026 BMW iX3 reviews are impressive... R2 has its work cut out

I believe BMW is putting together a single motor RWD version with the big 108 kWh battery so we could see well over 400 miles range in some markets. I think RWD is the only option in China.
  3. R2 Delayed?

It's been first half of 2026 for a while. So that could be May or even June. I think the only thing coming in Q1 2026 is the R2 media day where they go over the final version (and probably launch the configurator).
  4. R2 buyers - will you wait for gen 3 hardware (including LiDAR)?

Did you see the InsideEVs article that was pretty detailed about no upgrade path? It wasn't granular about the technical limitations, but it was pretty clear statement from Rivian that there is no upgrade path from them. Maybe it's technically possible, but Rivian isn't offering it. The only...
  5. R2 Delayed?

Zero percent chance. Factory is spooling up. No way can Rivian just sit on a finished factory for six months and not produce anything. It's exactly the reason why they have to launch with Gen 2 and wait on Gen 3. They have no choice as Gen 3 and lidar aren't ready. They're making the best of...
  6. How R2 is engineered to be future-proof platform (Rivian engineer)

Rivian has already said there is no upgrade path per InsideEVs. Even if I were to get a Gen 3 + Lidar version of the R2, I wouldn't consider it future proof. There always seems to be some technological advancement we will be missing that they didn't think of today. They will solve it in Gen...
  7. R2 plant bodyshop is incredible! - RJ video

The value of the Rivian hardware is going to be dependent on how eyes off and safe the system is which could be many years down the road. By the time Rivian is ready, the car is naturally going to depreciate and there may be something new on the horizon like Gen 4 or Gen 5. That's what makes...
  8. R2 buyers - will you wait for gen 3 hardware (including LiDAR)?

It's taking a while to develop the software to take advantage of even Gen 2 so there may not even be a big Gen 3 difference initially. One more reason I can't see any significant lidar premium since it's not doing anything significant for customers till the software is ready.
  9. R2 buyers - will you wait for gen 3 hardware (including LiDAR)?

You are getting some advanced self driving features with Gen 2, but the problem is that Rivian hasn't released them yet. If they had On-Ramp to Off-Ramp on Gen 2 released today, it would make buying decisions a bit easier in terms of knowing what we will get. Even by the time R2 is...
  10. R2 buyers - will you wait for gen 3 hardware (including LiDAR)?

Third option: Undecided. Waiting for price, final specs, test drives, etc. The car matters more to me than the lidar and Gen 3. If it's a great enough vehicle on its' own, I might skip lidar/gen 3. If it's not, I might wait for Gen 3 or buy something else.
  11. Why LiDAR for self-driving UHF -- RJ explains in new interview (Stratechery)

I think this is it. Rivian still basically believes that a vision only strategy could work. They are just at a disadvantage without all the data since their fleet is so small. So they are basically using lidar and radar to move faster and catch up since they can deploy cheaply on R2. I...
  12. Osborne Schmozborne

Yeah, no Gen 3 or lidar until late 2026 with Gen 2 being used initially. It doesn't like there is an upgrade path on lidar for Gen 2 vehicles. I suspect they won't offer an upgrade path from Gen 2 to Gen 3 computer either since they haven't promised Level 4 to Gen 2 customers. Plus, this...
