  1. Flat towing a Rivian

Yeah I was just going to say the same thing. This is a fundamental misunderstanding of how regen and electric motors/generators work.
  2. Flat towing a Rivian

All of the conditions above are driver inputs. Not dynamic conditions. Push accelerator, push nothing, push brake. This mirrors how exhaust braking works. Push accelerator and exhaust brake disengages even if the RV is not yet accelerating. No input to accelerator or brake pedal and exhaust...
  3. Flat towing a Rivian

The key capability to be able to flat tow an EV is being able to decouple the motors. This was earlier in the thread. Being able to actively couple and decouple the motors also allows for higher efficiencies . Decoupled wheels are allowed to spin freely without the spin loss of the motors...
  4. Flat towing a Rivian

I honestly have no clue what you aren’t understanding about how regen and flat tow would work. It is incredibly simple because the problem has already been solved for when and how to break. That combined with decoupling you can cover all flat towing scenarios sufficiently. Accelerate, coast...
  5. Flat towing a Rivian

It sounds like you haven’t driven a car with regen braking before — I apologize if that is a wrong assumption. Regen braking is dynamic. When the car is coasting or the breaks are applied the regen breaking automatically kicks in. In many vehicles you can adjust the strength of the regen...
  6. Flat towing a Rivian

You can’t do that. You can’t regen brake a full battery. You won’t want to set it to regen only because you will want the brake force consistent and more predictable like pressing the break pedal. The only real change to put in for flat towing an EV would be whether to regen while coasting -...
  7. Flat towing a Rivian

Way overthinking this. Flat tow breaking is not that complicated. Often flat tow system are set up to simply put braking force to a flat x% based on the receiving a breaking signal through the connection. Others are relative to the breaking force applied to the RV. The math for breaking...
  8. Flat towing a Rivian

This is why I wrote the person does not understand flat towing that wrote it would be a burden. Rengen braking would replace regular breaking while the Rivian is towed (if they do it right.
  9. Flat towing a Rivian

When you flat tow a vehicle and apply the RV break it turns on the Car brakes as well to assist in slowing both vehicles. This is effectively ā€œfreeā€ energy which would otherwise be burnt off as heat in the brakes.
  10. Flat towing a Rivian

Man, this would be great news. Haha you can tell whoever said that doesn’t understand that you use the flat tow vehicle to help you slow down. If done right it shouldn’t be a ā€œburdenā€.
  11. Apple CarPlay and Android for R1T / R1S?

I believe it is confirmed there will be CarPlay support.
  12. Ford invests $500M in Rivian! Partnership to deliver all-new Ford EV

This is an old service model that will be replaced. People expect you to come to them or to come get their car. This will become the new white glove service. Come to me and fix the car on site Come to me and swap the car for a loaner My most valuable thing is my time
  13. Rivians feelings about lidar

Why do you keep saying ā€˜at night’. Lidar is an active system and more effective at night and significantly better than neural net imaging at night because it does not require external light. Yes it is negatively effected by certain weather conditions, but that makes the combination of imaging +...
  14. Rivians feelings about lidar

I initially bought into this explanation as as well. The reality is that full self drive should have multiple overlapping redundancies, and lidar is one of them. Also lidar is an active system where imaging cameras are a passive system that is dependent on the surrounding lighting conditions...
  15. Rivians feelings about lidar

This is yet another excellent course correction from Tesla.
  16. Ford invests $500M in Rivian! Partnership to deliver all-new Ford EV

These cars will rarely have to be serviced. I don’t need white glove to get my tires rotated and the car inspected annually.
  17. Ford invests $500M in Rivian! Partnership to deliver all-new Ford EV

I’ll have to find the article, but there was a great article about the mindset that Rivian could take being partnered with Amazon. The skateboard platform is an unprecedented opportunity for car manufacturing to become much more like the production of other pieces of technology like phones...
  18. Ford invests $500M in Rivian! Partnership to deliver all-new Ford EV

Yes, it could result in a lower end work truck EV (Ford version) and a high-end Rivian based vehicle. As the pricing improves for the skateboard it will move down to the lower cost/higher volume models.
  19. LIVE from Rivian's NY Auto Show Preview Event! (Q&A and R1T / R1S Hands-On)

Thanks for posting this. This is more proof IMO that they have learned many of the lesson that others have not. The skateboard is what they are ultimately selling. The high end SUV and Pickup market is the proof of concept that they will make a name for themselves. The math on fleet vehicles...
  20. LIVE from Rivian's NY Auto Show Preview Event! (Q&A and R1T / R1S Hands-On)

Its not a whole other car. They are going to use the same skateboard for multiple vehicles (again a lesson learned from Tesla that Tesla leaned the hard way). The difference for Rivian is that their skateboard is already the size to create these type of vehicles where the Model 3 chassis is...
