The only reason they made profit is because of environmental regulatory credit and SW services. Without the them, they did not make profit for vehicle sales.
From their shareholder letter:
Drive towards profitability

It is entirely possible that gen2 quad/max is available as limited edition only with much higher price point (>$120K) and as 2026 model year in mid to latter part of this year, if at all (meaning that Rivian may cancel it for now or on hold indefinitely - e.g., tank turn).
Frankly, the CA Dune...
Perhaps your definition is different than how investment community looks at what a start up is.
The fact that Rivian is not profitable and need constant external injection of funds doesn't make them a start up. Their product strategy and market acceptance and capture have put them in a huge...
Two things. Rivian is not a start up at this point. They have produced sufficient numbers of vehicles (EDV/RCV, R1T and R1S) and have been in business for nearly a decade and be a public company for few years.
The other is because they are not Ford/GM or VW, is why I said 20K~30K vehicles...
Towing was just an example. I have friend who tows his jet ski boat to lakes from his SoCal home (Havasu, Powell, Mead and so on) multiple times a year and he will not buy an EV for his needs. Renting is an option but why when you have multiple vehicles?
Aside from rare U-Haul towing that I...
True but all new products have teething issues, infant mortality of components and qualify/reliability issues - even for VW.
Don't know about after 100K units but definitely not the first 20K~30K units of each.
My thinking has evolved over the years on EV vs ICE (all variants of hybrids included).
I used to be "never gonna buy another ICE - EVs only for me".
With all the delays of new model introductions, inconsistent DCFC infrastructure and various use cases, I now believe the right answer is "it...

“On the product side, I think what we’ve done is combined the best of the old world and the new world,” said Decker.
“Old world means body-on-frame, solid rear...
I'm surprised that Rivian is not planning a SC in Dublin/Pleasanton area.
Martinez is a bit of surprise. I would have expected Walnut Creek/Pleasant Hill area.
In case you were wondering, here's an article from InsideEV about it.
https://insideevs.com/features/750652/ev-spare-tires/
I've had to buy compact spare from Rivian for the R1S, Modern Spare for the Tesla.
When we used to own a Mini Cooper, it came with run-flat tires and really didn't t...
In snow, Caltrans is clear on what you need. Even with M+S tires, my experience is that CHP always checked to see if I am carrying chains (snow socks should work as well). It having to carry it is the big deal than not having it even with M+S tires. Also, I've found that if it gets to R3...
Agree. I have had over 30yrs of DOD/NASA/DOE procurement experience as a program manger on multiple programs and pursuits, and the only way I can see this happening is through a huge IDIQ mechanism where CT was provided through a IDIQ contract holder.
So no different that any other companies lobbying and trying to influence. Just about every major companies in every industry do so.
I am very familiar with federal procurement process and anything this large has to be competed and not sole sourced. The fact that its in the budge line means...
Electrek has this story too. What's noteworthy is that this article shows the funding line where all these armored vehicles are to be purchased.
It was approved in December by the Biden administration and the current has nothing to do with these. This is the kind of transparency we can now...
I wished that Rivian had a rolling setting so that when coming to stop, it does not go into hold.
As for the blended braking, I never use it. I see no need for it - ever. Perfectly capable of recognizing variable deceleration rates and use the brake when needed. I have my regen set to...
One is usually well served by getting what you really want.
The problem with compromised decision is that at times it eats away at you. Over time one can regret making such a compromise.
An option is to pickup a lightly used gen 2 vehicle and if you don't like it or find it it has too many...
