Here's why Ford is pulling out of its Rivian alliance. It's losing money hand over fist, with second quarter figures just being released.

Ford can't afford to pay...
I thought about posting this to the thread on battery producers, but this is a different topic - CHARGING -worthy of attention in its own right.
China announced a new generation of battery charging using the CHAdeMO standard, boasting a newer, sleeker connector, 500-kW capability and, perhaps...
Here are a couple of interesting articles on 800V charging offered by Porsche. They argue for long distance driving, 800V charging is convenient and economical (in terms of the value of time saved). Could 800V charging be offered as a Rivian upgrade or does that not make any sense? Big...
Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. Rivian has four models on the front burners: R1T, R1S, Lincoln SUV & Amazon vans (plural). Production is delayed, and it be 2022 before the four models to which Rivian is already committed are rolling off the lines in expected volumes. If demand...
I keep going back and forth between the R1T and R1S. I really like the practicality, storage and versatility of the R1T but the R1S, at 16.4" shorter, is more maneuverable and sleeker looking. Maybe a shorthand for the differences might be, one is more country, and one is more city. Also, one...
John@johnking.
Would it be possible to put together a new survey, with the full cooperation of the forum administrator, asking questions you'd like to ask for doing a new version of the statistical analysis you did earlier? Questions about where forum folks are from, maybe with greater...
There's also the wheel well in the pickup bed that might be used for fridge storage. The lift-over height is lower. In the SUV, there's been discussion about whether or not the wheel well size will be the same as the pickup. The last I heard Rivian was trying to make that happen - same size...
I'm sure Rivian's fit and finish will be better than Tesla's. RJ is an auto guy from an early age; Elon was not. RJ has a Ph.D. from MIT in Mechanical Engineering with an emphasis on automotive engineering. MIT is home to numerous global auto industry research projects. One of those...
According to the Tesla timeline in Shanghai, provided by johnking, there's a six month interval between completing the plant exterior, fitting machines and start of production. That's awfully fast but it is China where things can get done quickly if you have money and the right connections...
bajadahl and DucRider, I think you're talking about the holy grail of BEVs - swappable and, hopefully, affordable battery packs. If Rivian could offer this, and few others were able to, it would constitute a huge competitive advantage.
But I don't think the possibility rests in the hands of...
Second that. Maybe we could ask and encourage John, with rivianforums' help, for an expanded study. Get folks to give up-to-date info and encourage participation.
Wow, well that's a surprise if it's accurate. However, come to think of it, with a 3 million square foot, newly renovated facility in Normal, setting up a separate transfer line for Ford/Lincoln does make sense, and it brings a lot of experienced Ford personnel into Rivian's realm. And it...
Pherdnut says, "Lincoln aesthetics on a Rivian platform could be a pretty killer combo. It's still not clear to me whether Rivian's just going to be shipping them some skateboards and providing expertise or actually collaborating on design and actually building the vehicle."
I doubt if Rivian...
Hi John@johnking. It's interesting the top two states, California and Texas, in terms of pre-orders and population size show RJ's expected preference for R1Ts over R1Ss, but the next four states in terms of pre-orders and population size, FL, WA, IL & NY, reverse the preference, with R1Ss...
The key information we're missing is Rivian's degree of vertical integration versus reliance on suppliers. The range in the auto industry is huge.
Tesla is or has been about 75% vertically integrated which means it makes most of the parts, components, sub-assemblies, assemblies and systems...
John, kudos on your statistical analysis. Impressive. It's interesting how close your aggregate numbers are to what R.J. predicts as an initial sales ratio - a 55% R1T to 45% R1S split. I tally 57% pre-ordering R1Ts, using your numbers (132/231).
In your analysis, the top 5 in reported...
