  1. R2 Highway Range at 70MPH = ~250 Miles (Modeled)

I didn't dig into the calculations the AI did, but I think something is amiss. I plotted out the numbers and the curve has the wrong inflection. As speed increases, the range should drop exponentially. As noted, the power requirement goes up to the 3rd power with velocity. I drew in a...
  2. RJ Selling Rivian Stock

Possibly sell-to-cover taxes for performance based stock compensation. Figure he's being conservative and selling off at the highest tax bracket percentage, so selling off 37% of his stock grants to cover the taxes. So maybe he got an extra $6 million award bonus as part of his compensation plan...
  3. When will the US get true fast charging?

When the federal government decides to put money into it, that's when we will get better charging in both speed and availability. Of course, the whole grid and infrastructure needs an upgrade including energy storage to buffer against rapid massive increases in power demand.
  4. The Rivian R2 Reviews are Here!!! 656 HP, 609 lb-ft

My 2023 As a reference, my 2023 dual motor Polestar2 does about 3.0 mi/kWh on an open highway cruise with A/C going. It has a 78kwh battery pack. I usually stop every 150 miles or so which is good timing for bio breaks.
  5. L2 Charging Stops - Pin Possibly Overheating Due to Defect?

It can say whatever. But physics is physics. Heat generation (power) = Resistance * electrical current ^2. Adding an extension cable is adding resistance. Now, you can just back off the current to bring the temps down. But to run it at max current with the extra resistance is asking for trouble...
  6. L2 Charging Stops - Pin Possibly Overheating Due to Defect?

If I'm Rivian and knew you were charging at 48A with an extension, I''d void the warranty for the vehicle inlet. Quite frankly, it's very stupid to push that much current while using an extension unless you enjoy the added risk of burning down your truck and your home.
  7. L2 Charging Stops - Pin Possibly Overheating Due to Defect?

Those types of IR guns typically have a cone of detection. The further away it is from what it's measuring, the bigger the area. Usually somewhere on the device, it shows this cone angle. So whatever measurement it's giving will be some average over the area.
  8. L2 Charging Stops - Pin Possibly Overheating Due to Defect?

Also, extension cables are another big resistor in the electrical circuit, so everything gets hotter. If using an extension cable, turn down the current.
  9. L2 Charging Stops - Pin Possibly Overheating Due to Defect?

The one side missing the black pin cap is an indication that it got too hot; that enabled the cap to get loose. It may be lodged in the mating connector. How were you measuring temp? If using a flir, shiny objects often don't show correct. Matte colors typically show temperatures the best on...
  10. Orange, CA RAN is now open!

I just did a quick look at an EVgo and Tesla close to the new RAN in Orange. At this instant.
  11. J1772 extensions for home charging safe?

Keep the current low. Heat generation is to the square of current. 48A will make 4x the heat of 24A. Power = volts * amps. Volts = amps * resistance. So heat generated = power= amp^2 * resistance.
  12. The RAN station in Orange, CA is not where it is marked on the RAN map :) operational this month!

Not at all; I live in SoCal where my home rate is over $0.30 super off-peak. I linked the Rivian Roamer web page which lists the prices at every RAN site in real-time as Rivian has been adjusting them. And I pointed out accurately that some sites are as low as $0.27. This statement was in...
  13. The RAN station in Orange, CA is not where it is marked on the RAN map :) operational this month!

Rivian has been adjusting prices constantly. Some locations are as low as $0.27. Rivian roamer has the prices for all of the sites. https://rivianroamer.com/charging/networks/rivian-adventure-network
  14. Level 3 Charging 2025-2026 for Rivian R1S May Require a $300 "Accessory"

Absolutely do not use that cheap adapter with your Rivian! I've taken apart a cheap one before and they undersized the conductors along with not having proper temperature sensing to prevent a meltdown. You can by a proper adapter from Lectron or A2Z for only a hundred more. A Rivian z if...
  15. Level 3 Charging 2025-2026 for Rivian R1S May Require a $300 "Accessory"

Adapters will be a fact of life for at least a decade due to the mix of vehicles being sold now. I prefer Lectron myself for adapters.
  16. Inaccurate nav SOC prediction (wind?) on Clayton, NM to Pueblo, CO stretch

No matter what type of car you drive, it's best to do real time efficiency calculations yourself. A long time ago, I was driving from Austin to Dallas in my 1996 Nissan. I noticed my coolant temps were about 10F hotter than normal (I had an obd2 scanner plugged in). I ended up getting about...
  17. Check your home electrical connections, friends

I only charge at as high of a current as required. Heat generation is to the square of current. 40A generates about 78% more heat than 30A. Some nights, I back all the way down to 10A because that's all that is needed to fill up by morning.
  18. RAN charging how much???

We shall see! It does take about 18 months for a site to go online from when the project is kicked off. So, I think we are now past that window of stuff that was already kicked off when all the NACS stuff went into motion.
  19. RAN charging how much???

Keep in mind all the RAN locations were planned back in 2020, well before all the NACS business.
  20. Gen 1.5 NACS Charging Dispenser Technical Specs (RAN Charger)

Yes, I said they would derate in post #15 :) I didn't catch this was NACS specific though, so thanks for clarifying that. That said, the supplier of the NACS cable is the same as the CCS cable on RAN. I would not expect any significant difference in thermal performance on RAN between the two.
