  1. Paint: Can someone please explain how Rivian can justify charging $1,500/$2,500 for select colors?

Very helpful, thanks! So a color change wrap is the cheaper way to go, but the trade-off is it's likely less aesthetic than a PPF wrap, and less protection. Lots of things to consider! I wonder if any OEM has considered factory installs of PPFs? Seems like an add-on that some would spring for.
  2. Paint: Can someone please explain how Rivian can justify charging $1,500/$2,500 for select colors?

Digressing a bit here, but for someone who knows nothing about wraps, I'm curious. I am more interested in the protection aspect of the paint, than the being able to have it look however I want. Are there clear wraps that still provide protection? What ballpark costs should I be expecting for a...
  3. EV versus ICE Cost of Ownership calculator

I'm definitely digressing a bit here, but I think it's worth clarifying since there is at least a moderate interest between people on this forum and general environmental conservation. While certainly a good thing, it probably isn't completely accurate to view tree planting as a permanent...
  4. What are you going to pull / tow with your R1T?

I'm crossing my fingers that a custom build of something like this could work on the Rivian: https://gofastcampers.com/. Super light, low profile, meets our needs with minimal fuss.
  5. Roof Top Tents

Nice! I'm hoping to eventually plug on of the campers on the R1T. Hope the short bed doesn't make it super difficult for them to build out.
  6. What We Know - Collecting Information Directly From Rivian

I get your sentiment, but that is clearly not what Rivian was going for with their first products, and I think Rivian's approach kind of makes a lot of sense. RJ has talked about the R1S/R1T being "halo" products, ie probably not something for the "unwashed masses". If I'm understanding their...
  7. AC 110V power outlet

Wonder when we might get additional details about the truck bed outlets? I can't seem to find anything on the website or in the configurator but maybe I'm missing it? I'd love to move away from propane for camping, but didn't feel like the built-in camp kitchen was compelling enough at the price...
  8. Are you excited or dissapointed?

I think it was limited by computer, not by an actual battery pack constraint. In either case, I think it makes a lot of sense for Rivian to start with the 135 kwh pack first, which informally seems to be the most popular option. Add to that the idea that they are probably making more profit on...
  9. what's the new pricing?

True, but isn't Rivian trying to compete in the the luxury truck space, at least initially?
  10. R1T $69,000 starting price - opinions

Yeah, I get that they are targeting different markets, and at different price points, but I think a certain amount of comparison/overlap is inevitable until the market fills out a bit more. I guess I'm hoping that some indirect competition will still help us who are still squarely in the Rivian...
  11. R1T $69,000 starting price - opinions

I'm hoping the addition of more competition pushes Rivian to be a bit more cost-competitive. https://www.detroitnews.com/story/business/autos/general-motors/2020/10/26/lordstown-motors-pushes-forward-endurance-truck/3728164001/ Rivian has my strong preference for lots of varied reasons, but I'm...
  12. VW ID.4 electric SUV will come with 3 years of free charging on Electrify America’s network

Especially if you're going to the kind of places where Rivian's are marketed as being suited for - small, rural towns where I've found it's typically more expensive to fill up.
  13. Do you think that Rivian vehicles could get the same hate that Tesla owners sometimes deal with?

This is probably the heart of my disagreement. I think to ascribe the social ill of increased polarization to one side of the political spectrum is a bit naive/tribal, and possibly misses the bigger picture of the role that how we get our "news" today plays. Basically, I think polarization is...
  14. Do you think that Rivian vehicles could get the same hate that Tesla owners sometimes deal with?

Politics, really? It's not even a good analysis. If it was simply a luxury/class issue then we should see the same hate towards other luxury brands, right? I don't get the sense that other luxury brands are targeted in the same way that Teslas sometimes are, but I obviously don't have any data...
  15. Rivian R1T to participate in the 2020 Rebelle Rally [Update: 6th Place Finish]

Actual competition doesn't start until Saturday. They had a short livestream this evening kicking things off. Excited to follow along! The R1T was given a little air time in the kick off thing, cool to see it in action.
  16. Environmental Concerns

Funnily enough, I've heard of some studies that say moving away from fossil fuels would be worth it for the air quality benefits alone, and that adding the climate benefits too should make it a slam dunk.
  17. Environmental Concerns

I think this is one of those things that seems like a reasonable perspective on it's face, but the data really doesn't support it. Industrial wastes (full disclosure, I work in radiological waste) do not pose the near-term, climate destabilizing threat that CO2 does. We have a pretty good handle...
  18. Tesla Battery Day

It's also worth considering whether we think that change will be a step change or incremental improvements ended up with the % gains listed. I think mentally most find missing out on the big step change harder to swallow than the smaller incremental gains, but I'd expect the change in real life...
