Hard disagree. They are ways to prevent every one of dozens of automakers from having to roll their own custom system that users have to log into and manage separately. I can pop into any car that has Android Auto and have all my stuff there, ready to go, looking and feeling like they do...

I believe it just triggers the car to recalibrate its speedometer. Apparently it also updates the graphics on the menus to show the car with the correct wheel. Also might tune the suspension for different profile tires.

I imagine a big part of that is that it's so much cheaper to do service on a car that exists locally as opposed to one 2 hours away.
