Nope, you just lift the bikes in, and reach over the side, pull the lever down towards the cab and you're done. you only need to get in to install/reinstall if you remove the racks. I like the Builtright solution, but am going to go with their side Molle panel, so I can attach my WaterPort Day...

I'm surprised to learn you'd not use the rack to anchor anything to the bed. I have the Ride88 rack that has an attachment track that only uses the top 4 existing spots in the bed and that seems super solid, I use with 2 MTBs with total confidence. I was hoping to replace this attachment rack...
