Good thing you're contrived b.s. example only ever happens on the driver side and never the front, rear, or passenger side.
"B.S. example". Dude, many off your comments to me and others are totally smart assed. Just blow dude. And I do have situations where the passenger does the same thing or is out and watching. I've been driving trailers before the day your parents unfortunately laid down together.

You can drive with the driver's door open if your seatbelt is on and you're sitting in your seat. Same goes for the second item you mentioned. If your seatbelt is on and your door is closed, the vehicle wont go into park if you lift off the seat. Basically, as long as you have your seatbelt on, you need to either have your butt in the seat or your door closed and the truck wont go into park. This is a safety measure that keeps your truck from driving away without you in it ;)
So what I realized yesterday is that you can drive the truck with your seatbelt off and door open as well. But it requires that you drag the brake while doing so. I'm not sure if it's a bug or if it's to enable very slow maneuvers where you need a door open for visibility while moving the vehicle , like a technician needing to put the truck on a ramp style lift. But the truck did move by lightly dragging the brake and feathering the accelerator at the same time.

^^^You guys obviously haven't been in trucks much or towed a lot. For those who have, you know what I mean. Being able to back up with the door open allows you to see everything on drivers side, be it a rock, a dog, a post, or a small child (which the cameras and radars might not catch).

Also, ITEMS #1 & #2 ARE COMPLETELY UNRELATED, SEPARATE REQUESTS. Every car and truck I've owned over 30 years allows me to go forward and back with door open. Never had an incident. If you're going to get out of the truck, put in park - duh. The butt off seat is for old school, traditional, look over shoulder back ups - and sometimes it's nice to get yourself higher to have a wider angle of viewing (having tailgate down can be a lifesaver with a low trailer).

By no means do I want the car to keep driving with door open, butt off seat. The Rivian is actually better tuned for what I'm asking than any ICE car or truck because those actually do continue to drive, forward or reverse, with foot off brake. Rivian, if anything, would barely creep if you forget to put into park - more than likely, it would stay stationary.

For those of you Ben Affleck / J-Lo mall crawlers, this post will be irrelevant.
The door thing gets me a ton. My truck driving revolves around hooking up trailers by myself on unimproved dirt at all sorts of angles, so having the door open and popping in and out is really the only option. I'll even drag my toe in the dirt to measure how much i'm moving in that last couple inches. (Pro tip, get an extra long ball hitch mount as with a standard length there is about 1/2" between hitch and license plate making it a real pain to mount in challenging conditions) So having to open and close the door a bunch is a hassle. Plus, I agree in the old school idea of cameras can be nice, but staring at screens while driving is no replacement for looking at the real world and is in my humble opinion antithetical of the whole "Adventure" mantra of Rivian. Less phones and data, more encouragement to experience the real world is what I truly hope Rivian will represent to stand out in the EV world. Some changes that allows things to be a little simpler even if a bit less safe can be great.

Well, I can't speak for anyone else. But, just shy of 40 years ago, I was pulling and backing an intermediate range nuclear weapon through the tight streets and forests of Germany and never had to do any of that to pull and back a nuke safely through some really tight spaces.

Too bad you never got good at it.

You, sir, get it.

I'd bet $1000 I'd crush you on a 12 lane boat ramp with fast launch/retrieve.
But only if you have spotter(s) and can get in/out of your vehicle multiple times, right?

ROFL

Nope,.done it by myself MANY times with no door opening...jump out, launch boat and dock, and back to truck in minutes. Lots of times in ultra high traffic at ramps on Lake Powell, etc. There are just certain situations where it's nice and others on here seem to agree. How much towing have you done? Do you even have a Rivian?

Anyway, let's put this to rest. I get hot headed when people say things like my "made up B.S. story". Peace
