The wait is almost over. The first R2 variant, featuring dual motors and all-wheel drive, launches this spring.

We’ll be sharing full details—pricing, options and more—on March 12. That’s just 4 weeks and 2 days from today. But who’s counting?

*Prototype vehicles shown. Final design, equipment and accessories for actual production vehicle may differ.

Luckily for you (and all of us) it is the shortest month!

Correct me if I am wrong, but RJ promised that the launch edition would be at our under 45K, and he made that promise before Trump announced tariffs; is that correct?

If so, Rivian is caught between a rock and a hard place - not only does it have to contend with the impossible to predict tariff rates, but also with increasing inflation. Is it any wonder Rivian can’t wait to launch the Lidar versions of the R2 so they can price it appropriately.

To wish that Rivian would also announce prices for models that might come out six months hence would be to wish for the collapse of Rivian as a company, and that would be corporate malpractice.

No RJ didn't say the launch edition will start under $45k. All that's known is that the R2 will start around $45k, so probably the RWD base model.

So there are now big incentives on current R1's that expire early March - coincidence?

I've got a first day reservation for the R2, although I love my LE R1S I need something like an SUV to carry two recently adopted dogs - and would prefer quicker charging (and longer range) than my R1T.

You're wrong.

The base model single motor standard battery will start at 45k. That has been officially confirmed many times over the past two years.

The launch edition is known to be a dual motor "well-equipped" model, and will definitely be more than that. That's also been confirmed many times

The high end premium model will have the lidar, and that's not coming until the end of the year at the soonest (again, this is from Rivian, not speculation) although I expect more like early 2027.

Because market share and volume are the critical numbers for the R2, I personally expect the base model to be available pretty soon after launch - well before the high end trim with the lidar since the high end will only sell a fraction of the base+launch combined. The base model will be affordable to the majority of car buyers, and that translates into the large numbers they need. If they instead focus only on the high end trim then the accessable market is severely limited similar to the R1.

Nothing to do with R2. Everything to do with disappearance of tax credit and slow EV sales because of it.

Given this March 12th date, when will one actually be available to buy? Soon I'm sure, but was there a date published?

RJ never, ever said Launch Edition would be $45k.

No date was given for configurator access which would be the first step. After that, you wait in line, pay in full and set up your delivery day.

Couple of folks have already confirmed that your belief is mistaken somehow. What RJ has said in multiple earnings calls is that initially, the R2 delivery spec is the launch edition and not the base entry level trim. He as never confirmed any price point or the content of the launch edition vehicle.

He learned a hard lesson during the R1 release of committing to a price point and had to live up to the original pricing. He was not going make the same mistake by committing to a price point or trim/spec for R2.

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.

No specific date, but Rivian has confirmed that deliveries of the R2 are expected to begin in the first half of 2026. Therefore they have until the end of June to start delivering. I’m hoping it’s before then, but you never know.

Of course if you didn’t put down a reservation you’ve got about 200,000 people ahead of you according to the latest estimates (early 2025).

RJ also said the R2 will be fully ramped in about 18 months. If I remember correctly the max production capacity for the R2 is 155,000 at the Normal, Illinois plant. That’s quite a wait, but worth it in my opinion. My lease should be up by then (late 2027), so good timing for me.
