RJ has done well with the engineering and product development. He (or people chosen by him) have done a less stellar job at communications and manufacturing. I can see Amazon and the other big share holders (who own over a third of the company) pushing for a strong, experienced COO like Cook was to Jobs. The firing of the VP of manufacturing may have been the first sign of this and the delay in replacing the “retiring” COO late last year.

Time will tell but it could get interesting later this year.
Wait, was that actually confirmed regarding the VP of Manufacturing? I am not aware of any official statements that Erik Fields was let go. Last I heard he was "transitioning out of the role" and that is not typical for someone being let go.

My previous VP ( I work in a big pharma company) was “transitioned” out of his role as someone took over his position. He did a few minor projects before finding another job two months later. It is a way to save some face, keep your insurance and salary and have time to find another job. This is a much more likely scenario than someone I their forties who joined 14 months ago suddenly deciding that they didn’t want this job, without having another job to go to.
