There IS a retrofit path. You retrofit the entire vehicle that is parked in your garage/driveway. You trade-in for a new car. It's how it's always been done since the automobile became consumer product. Why anyone would expect different for EVs only? Highly illogical.

It's a cross-platform standard for secure digital keys. The advantage is that you don't need an app. Sure, Rivian's app is something you'll want anyway, but for example I have a home lock that uses the similar function.

A *BIG* advantage over the app is that the key still works when your phone is dead. Rivian standard PaaK won't work if your phone battery dies. Apple Car Key will. (For about 18 hours - basically the phone puts itself into "ultra low power mode" where only a few things - like Car Keys - will work instead of truly going dead.)

I hate to be the "but Tesla…" guy here, but Tesla did retrofit older vehicles with newer FSD computers.

The big difference is that Tesla sold those vehicles as "has all the hardware needed for FSD" only to figure out later that they didn't.

I would argue that the fact that when I bought my Gen 1, Rivian said it would be capable of more autonomous driving with software updates (such as hands-free,) that Rivian should do like Tesla and retrofit vehicles to have the capability they said would come.

Okay, time to stop praising Tesla, it feels icky.

This has been discussed on other threads, but you can't really make a comparison between Tesla retrofitting FSD computers and gen 1 to Gen 2 rivian. Tesla was able to do that because the vehicles shared the same architecture and wiring harness so it was a simple part swap.

Simple part swaps simply do not exist between gen 1 and Gen 2 because it's an entirely different vehicle architecture with entirely different wiring. You would have to disassemble the entire vehicle and replace almost all of the electrical components and all of the wiring... At which case you just bought yourself a new Gen 2 vehicle.

Not saying that this is the excuse for not delivering on promises, but just shedding light on why "feature x" can almost never be retrofitted to gen 1

And I'm sure there are things other brands do but Tesla never would, if you look hard enough. It proves nothing. All it proves is each brand make business decisions based on their own situation.

Those who insist Rivian should be everything Tesla is... well, maybe they should just stick to driving Teslas. Reality check, Rivian ≠ Tesla.

To add on to this, you only got the FSD computer upgrade if you upgraded from either standard Autopilot or Enhanced Autopilot to FSD. I bought my Model 3 in 2018 with EA. When Elon decided he didn’t like the numbers he was seeing with FSD purchases, he offered EA owners to upgrade to FSD, with the computer upgrade, for $2K. At the time, I figured it would help with resale value if it had the upgraded FSD controller. So I went for it. Now… I guess the upgraded driver displays (over the standard controller) are nice.

Not necessarily an apples-to-apples comparison (pun intended), but the Apple Watch supports a subset of the Tesla app features, including using the Watch as your vehicle key instead of having to open the app on your smartphone.

It was pitched as the deal of a lifetime because Elon said Tesla+FSD was actually an infinite money hack because all the cars would be independently operating as taxis and making money for you 24/7. A Tesla model 3 was supposed to cost several hundred thousand dollars now.
