I lost my Fisker, looks like my Canoo is going to be gone here soon, but I'm holding Rivian until I retire.

Edit: Sold my Tesla recently. It had gone up 3000% from when I first got it. Not looking forward to the taxes on that one but I had bills to pay and have lost faith in current leadership. #shrug ?‍♂
Kudos to you for being so patient. I don't think I could wait for 3000%. Awesome!!!! If it makes you feel better, I have a 112K position in Polestar. Hopefully, their Chinese overlord won't let them fail similar to Lucid's Saudi overlord ?

As for taxes, I'm in the same boat. However, next time consider borrowing against it with your broker. The interest rate is still A LOT lower than your tax bracket.

There should be an option for "I'm not planning on selling."

I take the Oracle of Omaha perspective that if you believe in a company you buy and you hold.

If Rivian were to completely tank, I would try and get out with something vs. going down with the ship, but otherwise I'm not planning to sell

Being net-positive would be nice. The pie in the sky would be when it grows enough to pay for a nice chunk of an upgraded R1. What's the phrase that got tossed around a few years ago...diamond hands.
I'm curious: What price do you plan to exit your position at?
The type of investment makes the question valid or invalid. If you have invested for the long run, 5 or more years, then you don't stress over a flexing market till that goal. Not every price changes. A perspective of trust in the corporation's future.

Imagine asking that question when Tesla was $14, and Musk was underwater and having stock trust issues. Not that he still doesn't have them today, with the EU investment firm dumping stock. Long-term or bust here. It has worked for me before, like UBNT, and that 3,000+% gain took 11 years!

Rivian, to me, is a long-term investment.

I agree with you. However, I have my own set of rules that keeps me in check.

So now that we have 100 votes, I have come to the conclusion that many of my Rivianites bought in above $35. I will need re-evaluate my exit price or keep 1/3 of my position to ride and die. It will be an exciting ride regardless ?

That’s because many die hard Rivian members got their shares at IPO. Rivian had a program for those with reservation to participate in the IPO at the priced, cost. I don’t recall how many shares (I want to say 100?).

Personally, I was not part of that but did buy initially in $80s and sold around $150 during the first week. Since I wasn’t a part of the IPO, I had no restrictions. Of course I’ve bought and sold Rivian since and currently underwater, like many on this form.

Thanks to the price being in The toilet, I’ve managed to average down. Still, I am not willing to average down further - I have more Rivian shares than I care to hold. I’m done trying to catch a falling knife with Rivian. Will just see where it goes.

I empathize with you. Sell cover calls if your basis in range. If not, I still feel confident it will do well after 2027 if there are no supply issues.

I've personally entered in another company's IPO at $300 and went down to ~30... Held my position and 5 years after I'm about to break profit (minus inflation, of course)....

One thing I have is patience :) and while I'm in not urgen need due to unforeseen circumstances, I don't see why would I be selling to less than my personal target! My next Rivian vehicle should be pay with my $RIVN earnings :)

One thing I have learned about covered calls. If you buy, and sell a call below your purchase price (giving you a bit of downside safety) and get exercised, you will get a loss on the stock. You would then need to wait 30 days to repeat that scenario, in order to not have the loss disallowed. You will have income from the options sale.

I have a few of those as well. My biggest debacle is SPCE. Down 95% and $100k. I allowed my greed and speculation to take over. This is why I'm not keen on holding Rivian too long. I need to make up for my past failures ?

The question is limited to $, but people buy and sell on feelings that may reflect situational and more complex issues.
If the stock I bought became enough to buy a new Rivian, or when it gets there, I may consider that a buy, not a sell.

So, the question is also a buy vs sell question as well as a dollar one.?
