Most manufacturers build sequentially - but I'm wondering if that is true with Rivian as well.

Nov '19 Reservation here - got the email last week about the shop opening (actually saw the link at the top of the My Account page hours before I saw the email) and chose a slightly different variation from what I reserved. Got my 8 steps and the VIN is 66xx. Seeing reports of 78xx+ being produced already. Does that mean my VIN is done?

My 8th step is "Preparing vehicle". Wondering if that means it could all happen soon.

Thanks in advance!

I hope that’s what it means. My guide could only confirm that having a VIN means that the truck is in production or complete.

I just got a 73xx VIN today. Not sure what that means in terms of sequencing and what others are seeing.

I received 6740 last week from the shop. Guide said the truck was in Normal and he would schedule it for transport to the local SC. It showed up at the SC today. So my guess is the truck was built and ready for shipping when I chose it from the shop.

I suspect they are assigned sequentially but not built sequentially. Mine is a 62XX, built in May.

If you are buying a vehicle from the shop, it seems those vehicles have already been built, and are in the shop because the original buyer's purchase agreement was not completed. Possibilites include last minute cancellation, financing failed, last minute spec changes, or possibly the vehicle was held for QC issues/rework. Probably no way to know exactly why.

The whole intent of the shop is that they are offering up vehicles that are sitting either at a service center or in Normal to folks who may want them.

I suspect they are assigned sequentially but not built sequentially. Mine is a 62XX, built in May.
Fairly certain it's the opposite. There's many reasons why car manufacturers assign VINs sequentially in the build process and there's no reason why Rivian would do otherwise.

My non-shop order was clearly already built and probably sitting in a holding lot in Normal before being shipped to Orlando. RJ said in the factory tour video after the paint shop, "once the body is selected, it's then assigned a whole build combination and actually connects with a customer". It would seem to me that customers are sometimes assigned at this step and maybe that's their intention but it's absolutely not always happening.

So you think VINs are assigned out of order? That seems odd to me. Mine was also a non-shop order I suspected might have been an order back-out or reject, but I had a late addition of the full-size spare, and it is accurately reflected on my Monroney (though missing from the truck at the moment).

VINs would be assigned to a truck in the factory in order. Then a truck/VIN assigned to a customer whenever.

The Monroney is interesting. I wonder if they print that after it's assigned to the customer to account for those sorts of changes.

It would be nice to know when your vehicle was completed.

My guide replied to my question last night and said my 66xx VIN is already built and is either already on the way to the SC or will be soon. Delivery in the next couple of weeks was her estimate.
