Wisconsinite here thinking of planning trip up to the Boundary Waters. Anyone here been up there and have good recommendations or suggestions?

Goal is to do day hikes around the area, kayaking, and some fishing. Looking to camp while there, dispersed or at a campground.

Hiking is sparse in the BWCA. It is primarily a place to explore by boat. The ice won’t be off the lakes until April sometime. Permits are required and should be applied for week in advance

best hiking option is the Superior Hiking Trail. It follows the entire north shore of Lake Superior

There are a number of national forests campgrounds between the BWCA and the north shore of Lake Superior as well. I don’t have a specific recommendation but that might be the best bet for the combination of activities you are looking for. The Lutsen and Grand Marais area works be a good place to start.

I don't know the boundary waters well, but I always suggest visiting the UP. Copper Harbor area is really cool. You can camp at High Rock. Some of the coolest and most remote camping I've done was right there, outside of Colorado at least. The R1 should have no trouble making it down that trail.

Thanks. I was looking at the SHT as well. That does seem to be more what I’m after.

I have been up to the UP several times so just looking for something new. I do enjoy northern WI and the UP though. Spent a long weekend at the end of February north of Eagle River this year already.
