Adaptive cruise also uses friction brakes if the traffic slows faster than regen provides.
I second turning regen up to max and turning brake assist "off".
You may be surprised how much brake assist is actually used when the battery is not at 100%. I have it off and multiple times have been caught off guard with lower than normal regen - because the battery is hot or cold or something.
I actually have no idea why it sometimes lowers regen because I check the battery temp and it looks just fine to me. Whatever it is doing, in those situations friction brakes would have been engaged with brake assist and I wouldn't have even known it.
