The dampers are definitely the largest part of the cost, no doubt. It doesn't seem overly expensive compared to what we have seen before or from other higher-end brands. And FWIW, no saleable R1s were hand-built. There may have been more manual validation, but it was in no way hand-built.
Got it. That's what we were told based on the VIN. The VIN also comes up as a "SUV" and not a truck.

The gen 2 revision had nothing to do with service life. It was all about ride comfort and tuning out the bumpiness, and to match damping to the harmonics of the R1S' shorter wheelbase. In gen 1 they grafted the T's suspension straight over to the S. The T has a longer wheelbase, so going over the same bump, between front and rear axles, the chassis has more time to settle. Just like how a 4-door Wrangler feel more planted than a 2-door.
Service told us that the dampers were leaking. What is the downside to deferring replacing them for 6 months? Also, just for additional information these dampers were replaced in Sept of 2024 and have 37,000 mi on them.

I have done most of the work on previous high end cars myself but the Rivian is more difficult to work on and replace something like the dampers. It looks like there are more independent service centers working on Rivians now in PA (brakes, etc) but not replacing the dampers.

Like any shock absorber. They don’t work when there’s no hydraulic fluid to compress and control oscillation of springs. Ride quality will deteriorate and bounce like a pogo stick. And since R1 uses hydraulics to control roll also, instead of traditional anti-roll bars, the body will roll in turns. Rear traction will also be negatively affected. 7k+ lbs capable of high speeds… In a word? Dangerous.

Understood. Thank you for the information!
