I am debating about tinting the R1S, all the glass. Not to darken it but to keep the cabin cooler. I Was curious are there any studies out there about the energy cost of cooling a hot cabin vs one that is let's say 5 degrees cooler? Trying to think if it is worth it in the long run. I know some people like the really dark looks but that is asking for trouble in NJ as they give tickets for it.

I got nano-ceramic tint on all the glass, including the roof, hoping it will help keep the cabin cool in the summer. Nano-ceramic is supposed to be the best for reducing the "feeling of heat," but not sure how much is marketing vs reality. The windshield tint is clear. Side and rear windows are probably a little darker than what CA allows, but most tinted cars I see on the road are even darker than ours.

The "Search" button is your friend on this topic. Lots of threads where people have discussed ceramic tint and the impact on reducing cabin temps. IMO (I have all my R1T windows tinted with 70% 3M crystalline tint) it's well worth it.

Additional tint has a minimal effect vs getting higher quality tint overall for the sake of keeping the cabin cool. I definitely recommend using carbon tint and I just had them match the front windows to the rest of the tint of the vehicle for the sake of ease and cost. The vent function on the phone key is also very handy for keeping temperatures reasonable.

I've never done an energy cost analysis to see if the tint will pay for itself but I can assure you that ceramic tint will keep the cabin much more comfortable. Here in TX, the added comfort is well worth the added cost.

What you want is a high-performance nano-ceramic tint, and you’ll want to cover every piece of glass, including the windshield and excluding the roof.

I don’t have any technical data but I CAN tell you from many vehicles being tinted the before and after benefits, from running the climate system alone is a huge win, especially for an EV. You’ll spend less energy meeting and maintaining target temps in hotter climates.

Here is a post I made in a Tesla subreddit. It’s mainly focused on tint technology, so give it a read and educate yourself a bit.

On cost savings from climate control alone it's just not there IMO. Here in the US just about everyplace (including northern FL) gets down into the cooler temps in the winter time. For example Jacksonville, FL would get down into the 20s and 30s in the winter time

The heat rejection can certainly work as a benefit in the summertime but will work against you in the winter months. The R1 does not use a heat pump either so adding additional heating demand would not be desired.

Now with all that said the UV rejection is good to protect the materials on the interior from UV damage for vehicles that spend the majority of their life outside.

For me, I tint primarily for privacy and because I have light sensitivity. Also, folks who live out west where summer temps regularly get above 100F they may find it worth the trade off in the cooler months.

Every piece of glass in the Rivian rejects UV, the front, front side, and roof are all laminated and thus will be blocking all UV, the rears are tinted and will be blocking UV.
