When I first bought my Rivian, I was still new to the ev scene. I had a Tesla very briefly, and bought one of their charging boxes. When I switched to my Rivian, I knew I would need an adapter. Jumped on Amazon and bought a relatively cheap one. I've been using it with no issues for over a year now, up until yesterday. I got up and plugged my truck in, I checked it a few mins later to see the estimated time to finish, and it said 10 hours. I thought to myself there is no way, so I went and re seated the plug. It started out at the right speed, 5 mins later it drops down to a crawl. So I hard reset the truck, and reset the breaker on the charge box. 5 mins later same thing it drops down. I go for a visual inspection of the charge box and notice it has a 3 flashes of a red light, that means over heating. I thought that seems strange, I know its been hot as hell here lately, its only taking 5 mins to over heat? That's when I look at the adapter, and bingo found my problem. The heat from the outside and from the charging in general over time caused the adapter to crack. If anything I'm super impressed the truck was able to detect something like that and shut it down. Moral of the story, don't go cheap on adapters. I immediately jumped on amazon and ordered a new one from Lectron, that was delivered 4 hours later. And its charging perfect again.

The only three brands / model I would buy is A2Z Stellar, UMC TeslaTap or Lectron J-1772

I personally bought the 48 amp Lectron and gave it away to a forum member and prefer to use the 80 amp A2Z Stellar with built in lock and compact design.

I would recommend sticking with known brands like Lectron, A2Z and TeslaTap

I would recommend the A2Z Stellar NACS to J-1772 adapter which is available for $72 with flash sale going on right now. It’s got a compact build, 80 AMP capability, a built in lock, good customer service / warranty and overbuilt for futureproofing.

This adapter is used with Tesla home chargers and destination chargers commonly found at hotels / shopping center / parking lots.

The level 2 Stellar adapter will pay for itself overtime by avoiding an expensive fast charge on the road every night while you sleep at the hotel with Tesla destination charging.

You can use the same Tesla Find Us link to locate Tesla Level 2 destination chargers.

A2Z EV has a sale going on right now for NACS to CCS1 adapters ($170 to $127.50) / A2Z EV Stellar NACS to J-1772 AC Level 2 Adapter ($95 to $72) after discount code to save 25% off and get free shipping. The coupon also applies to AC J-1772 extension cords and AC - NACS extension cords ($165 to $124)

Click the link to chose your below products and stack the temporary code "FLASHSPRING" to save 25%.

NACS To J1772 adapter (Tesla Destination Charger for Hotels / Shopping centers) | Up to 80A | 20kW | 12 Months Warranty

A2Z EV Typhoon Pro NACS To CCS1 adapter - DCFC adapter - DC adapter 500A

A2Z EV NACS TO CCS1 Adapter - Save 25% / Free Shipping + bundle the A2Z Stellar AC NACS to J-1772 adapter for $72 additional after discount code "FLASHSPRING".

A2Z EV NACS to J-1772 - AC adapter for home / hotel destination chargers - 80A

A2ZEV NACS To J1772 adapter (Hotel Destination Charger for Hotels / Shopping centers) | Up to 80A | 20kW | 12 Months Warranty

A2Z Stellar Adapter NACS to J-1772 for Destination and Home charging. This adapter literally pays for itself

Tesla Find Us Superchargers available with adapter / Magicdock location Chargers

Here is a good example of 10+ free level 2 AC Tesla destination chargers 8 kW - 16kW charging available at a grocery store only if you have an adapter. This is commonly found at malls, shopping center, movie theaters, etc.

The Rivian you see is using DCFC level 3 with an adapter

You get what you pay for, the saying goes.
Never cheap out on critical items like this, made by mom and pop shops down the street or by Charging Adapters 'R' Us. Ditto on sticking to known, proven reputable and reliable brands. After all, your homestead and/or your EV is on the line.
Glad to see all you ended up with was a pos cracked adapter. Could have been a hell of a lot worse.

Cheap things are cheap for a reason. If one didn't choose to buy a cheap car, why cheap out on things that are as important as charging? That'd be like splurging on a Ferrari, only to buy generic tires from god-knows-where... and hope they don't kill you. Failure to charge is not even the worst that could happen.

Warning: not much help.

I have both the Rivian-provided NACS DCFC adapter and the A2Z Stellar J1772 AC adapter. The next time I use either will be the first time, but knowing that I have quality components at the ready if and when they are needed is priceless, even if one was gratis and other a very reasonable $72.
