Oddly Rivian seems to really be leaning into shop orders.
You know, I'll never understand the logic of building random configurations and throwing them in the shop instead of fulfilling ACTUAL orders you have that have been sitting in the queue since early June. Blows my mind

I work fabrication R&D in aerospace, and work closely with Industrial Engineers, the ones who manage factory flow, time studies, the most efficient ways to build a thing.

They are very likely building "average" configurations that they know will appeal to a large number of people. When you custom order something, especially when Rivian had a lot of little quirks, there's probably one or two things on your order that not a lot of other people ordered. I don't exactly remember what they all had, when my wife wanted the car we basically went bare bones because she didn't care about that stuff, but the assumption on the factories part is that you'll be ok getting your 90% car, and if not they don't care because someone else will buy it off the "lot".

Factory workers don't like change. Factory flow doesn't like the labor having to triple check what goes on what car, especially when it's a young company struggling to make a profit.

This and optimizing for throughout. If they have parts to batch build configs. They will.

Thr five tri motors that appeared were all black mountain brown ash wood.

Now that I finally have a guide assigned (or several, actually, from the Richmond VA service center—who have been great btw), I am gaining a clearer understanding about how things happen at Rivian.

One thing I learned, for example, that might positively affect your situation, is the dynamic of being close to end of quarter. My guides have indicated that Rivian likes to expedite deliveries at end of quarter to help make their delivery goals. Specifically, I was told Rivian will often double- or triple-up its rail service cadences with more vehicles, and/or they will augment rail service with truck transport services. Being the customer of a public company has its advantages.

Thanks for asking about my delivery. I'm basically still in a holding pattern. I received my new VIN late last week (after some nudging) and have been told that my delivery (pick-up) remains Sep 17, although I am getting the sense that date is going to slip. For example, I don't believe the vehicle has yet shipped from the factory. And once it arrives in Baltimore, it then needs to be put on a truck transport for its last voyage to Richmond. I actually have a text out to my guide(s) to hopefully get some clarity on things, especially because I have the logistics of returning my current Polestar and some planned travel all around the same general window.

FWIW I would suggest tactfully staying on top of your guide(s) on things. I get the sense they're very busy and professional persistence with some kindness mixed in helps move things along.
So, how did it go?

I got it! But barely. ?

I’ll do a longer write-up when I have time, but I nearly wasn’t able to leave the service center with my new truck because it was throwing up two errors the moment I sat in it. I was so discouraged and thought for sure I was going to be driving two and half hours home in a loaner. But the service staff jumped right on it and fixed the errors (one coolant error, one dynamic lighting error) within an hour, and I am now enjoying the new whip! This thing is awesome. Will share more when I get time.

What’s the latest on your end?

Congrats! After "very optimistic September delivery" it's now early October delivery which throws me out of the F&F discount. Talking to the service center if we can make delivery happen in September.

I just canceled my custom order and switched to an entirely different configuration after learning tons more about the vehicle from another sales person. F&F discount & referral code still make this a win.

Would you care to share what you learned?

Yeah that’ll go into a longer learning & ranting thread. The short version: performance upgrade will be a software update later, dark out and other things can also be done later. Stripped down my build.

Clarifying that a dual standard configuration is software locked and will have a future option to pay for a performance upgrade?

Assuming all on this thread are here bc their orders are taking longer than anticipated/desired...anyone actually get their build (not shop) within the estimated timeframe?
