I would leave the driver door open while kids sit in their seats. This will make sure that doors are not locked automagically.

As others have stated, the door handles are spring-loaded and not mechanically retracted. There's nowhere near enough tension in the spring to cause any harm to fingers. That said, I'm sure it could surprise a child and make them upset, but they won't be injured in any way.

Has anyone had their door handles go into the lock position when their kiddo was reaching to open the door and have their kids hand squished into the handle well? This has happened to my kids a few times, and after it happening this morning and my 6 year old crying I wanted to see if others are having this happen. It did lock unexpectedly this morning as it locked pretty soon after it unlocked and my phone was in my pocket so I didn't hit the lock button. I'm not the biggest fan of the way these door handles, and others with the handles embedded into the door work, but at least I don't live in a cold place where they freeze into the card body and you have to warm them to get them to open.

I did reach out to Rivian about the above although I don't think they are going to change their door handles for this reason.

Still love our car, just would like it to not crush my kids' hands now and again.

yes, this and all things related to automatic locking and unlocking have been super annoying for a vehicle that costs this much money. We keep hearing a lot of lock automation improvements will be made in software updates but I haven’t seen this and other issues be truly resolved.

No but after my rust snow yesterday I think I learned I’d like th handles to not pop out and unlock until I clean the snow off of the vehicle. With them out I ended up with wads of wet snow getting packed back toward the front of the handle where it is hinged. I fashioned a clean out tool from a piece of multi conductor speaker wire as I was not sure if the handle would freeze in place or possibly crack if the motor tried to push it out after the snow froze solid
