Video from Third Coast Drone shows Rivian vans burning outside an Amazon center in Houston. The video doesn’t capture the beginning of the blaze, but it shows firefighters doing their best to tame the flames. Crucially, though, it also shows something else: That each van was parked at a charger.

See, this isn’t the first set of Rivians to burn down at an Amazon location. Posts in Amazon worker subreddits show a similar situation last August in Salt Lake City, where another set of vans burned in a distribution center parking lot. Drivers in the comments noted that they’ve experienced issues with the vans charging in high heat, and suspected the chargers as having caused the blaze.

Chargers have been blamed for fires before, either due to improper home wiring or inadequate cooling. What’s still unclear, however, is whether professionally-installed chargers like these Rivian units are prone to the same issues as Level 2 chargers plugged into home dryer outlets.

From the footage it’s hard to even tell if they were all plugged in. Also no way to know if it was the charger or the van ??‍♂

Inside EVs - Video in article

In the video above, you can see a large parking lot with tens of EDVs and some are plugged in for charging. The maximum temperature that day had reached almost 100 degrees Fahrenheit as the scorching summer heat wave continues to affect several U.S. states.

The drone operator saw plumes of toxic black smoke rising towards the sky from one Rivian EDV first and then the fire spread to two other EDVs parked adjacent.

“We are aware of the incident and are investigating the situation,” a Rivian spokesperson told InsideEVs. “There were no injuries. As we are gathering information, it’s too soon to say what might have caused this thermal event.”

I like how they used 2 words to say fire; "Thermal Event".

The battery was not the source according to the spokesperson. I would be surprised if it was. These vans use LFP which is much less volatile than NMC chemistry.
Do you have a source for them using lfp? I thought they used nmc batteries from gen 1 vehicles

Yes, I should say it depends on when it was manufactured. It was also mentioned in interviews that they were using their LFP for EDV until the production of those packs ramped up. So I guess its possible if those were manufactured prior to the switchover they they could be the same Samsung based large pack. Its my understanding they have been using LFP in EDV for quite some time. Rivian hasn't stated publicly when they started using them but this article is from March of 2022.
