This is the sound that I get when I press my horn. I have the truck only for a couple of weeks and really, really love it (nothing broke yet). However, I had to push on my horn today to warn another driver but only got the hoarse castrate sound. I know there are plenty of DIY instructions but to be honest, I don’t think that I have to spend that much money and then have to DIY things. The same goes for simple hook-up for a radar detector. No more 12V outlets in the cabin in newer vehicles. Rivian please fix the horn issue since this affects safety!

P.S. Please dear forum, don’t come at me with deep psychological assessment that I need my truck as an extension of my masculinity and that I don’t want to put in the time for DIY work. I am the perfect Rivian demographic, first-time truck owner, happy in tune with myself but still feel somewhat castrated by this feeble sound.

The horn does suck now and I agree that they shouldn't have gotten rid of the second horn. Mine is okay, with the factory two horn setup but not great so I can't imagine how bad it sounds with one.

If it warns other drivers it's done it's job and any DIY project you take on is purely personal choice, regardless of how you feel the price paid is connected to that.

Not sure what else to say if a horn makes you feel "castrated".

nRivian needs that $5.26 from the 12V adapters and second horn in order to pay the salaries of legions of software developers. Their task is to create and maintain yet another second rate navigation app instead of just using CarPlay or Google Maps with Android Automotive.

This isn’t scientific, but I want to share an experience I had. I was at an intersection with two lanes turning left. There was a car at the front of each of the two lanes. I was the second car of the right lane with a car next to me and other cars behind us. The green turn arrow came on and… nobody moved. I waited for 3 seconds and gave a very brief tap on the horn to get people to look around and… nobody moved. I gave a good (~1 second) honk and… nobody moved. Finally, the person next to me in a Camry honked THEIR horn and the people at the front started moving so we could all go as the turn arrow turned yellow.

I’m not a person who uses the horn a lot, and most of my use is the blip / least amount of noise I can make to alert someone to something. My very brief horn honk generally does the trick in these situations in other vehicles. This wasn’t at freeway speeds where tire, engine, or wind noise in the other cars was reducing the effectiveness of the horn. Maybe they were both blasting music and it was coincidence that they started moving just after the Camry driver honked at them.

I can’t comment on the two horn (early builds) or one passenger side horn (later builds) but I don’t think the one horn on driver side setup R1 vehicles like mine is fit for purpose. I added a second horn about a month ago but haven’t had to use it. I’m sharing this in case some people get too hung up on @Bleek ’s choice of wording. This is a real-world example I’ve encountered.

Mine sounded like a scratchy record when I pressed it. Filed a ticket and had a repair. Now it sounds like a regular horn, albeit not what I’d expect from a truck. But as others have mentioned, it does the job of notifying others on the road and that’s all I need.

Just came here to laugh at the thread title ?

Also, one of the first complaints my wife had after driving our R1S was the horn. She claimed it didn't work. Apparently she didn't hear it at all. She's a honker (snicker) so it really matters to her.

My horn was pathetic. Tried to use it on the hi way when someone came over on me. Worthless. I could barely hear it with all the hi way noise.
I installed an additional air horn, now it grabs attention.

I agree with the OP, we shouldn’t have to fix our own horn. I’m shocked this horn complies to Federal requirements.

otherwise, love my R1S.
