Am I the only one having issues with the gear guard cable? When my truck was delivered, it stopped working right away. Wouldn’t lock the cable in the port on locking the truck.
Mobile service fixed it and it was working when they left. A few days later tried it and it doesn’t work again.

Now the cable is actually locked into the port. Thankfully it’s not attached to a bike, else I’d have to cut the cable. Even if they fix it again, I don’t know if I could ever trust it again. Might need to start locking bikes to a tie down instead.

My main complaint about this truck is it has too many moving parts that can fail.

I had my gear guard fail in the locked position when we first got our truck (over a year ago). Service replaced the entire locking mechanism and it’s been flawless since. They did not think that it was debris, but rather a failure mode in the mechanism assembly.

just in case, i now tie the gear guard cable to the end of another bike cable with a separarate lock with the other end tied to one of the d rings, mostly on long trips. I can still unlock gear using the gear guard but if that mechanism were to fail locked, i now have a redundant way to unlock the gear.

Thanks. That sounds like my situation and your failsafe solution sounds reasonable.

It has the added benefit of extending the guard cable which is useful as I often travel with 4 bikes. Also should mention that I posted about this here when it happened to me but no one else had experienced such issues. So maybe were just the lucky ones ;)

Ours jammed early on and was looped through 4 bikes.
Easily cut in 1 second with 6” bicycle cable cutter.
We bought this thinking it had a sensor that actuated an alarm, but no.
The GG cable is a no need frill.
We keep a padlock and a looped inner tube on each crossbar mount for bikes and other gear.
We also gave looped cables around bikes and slammed the ends in tailgate and tunnel doors.

Thanks for this input. Sounds like you're saying it's pointless to care about this feature not working. Can you clarify what you mean by

I use the gear cable looped through RockyMount fork mounts on a Saris triple track. My only goal is to keep a casual thief walking off with the triple track and mounts. I leave this in the exposed bed at all times.

@bike123.com I was just wondering if you could elaborate on your setup. I'm having a hard time picturing:
"We keep a padlock and a looped inner tube on each crossbar mount for bikes and other gear.
We also gave looped cables around bikes and slammed the ends in tailgate and tunnel doors."
