Gear Guard for R2

My understanding is that the R2 will have this in a software update soon.

What is the recommended hard drive type and size to get for recording?

I'm assuming there will be lots of setting choices?

Also note that not all Gear Guard functions require the external storage, at least on R1:

From my research it seems the below is the most cost effective option. Still writes quick enough and has a big operating temperature range. SSD's are so expensive now. $250+

I did a demo drive today in Denver and the options on screen had a gear guard link. It had two options to turn on it I didn’t get to mess with it in the short time I was in it.

R2 owners manual has been updated with the release of the latest software update today. Requirements are largely the same as R1, except size dimensions are now added, presumably bc of the globe box size? Seems like 1.7" x 1.2" is VERY tiny. Surely the glove box is bigger than that from what I've seen?

Interesting, it says USB 3.x and USB 2.0 but according to the manual it is a USB C port in the center glove box.

Can anyone confirm it is USB C, I was going to order a drive. I suppose I can order a dual drive.

usb 2.0 and 3.x are data transfer speeds. usb type c is the shape of the port. owners manual does state usb type c, so you just need any drive that has that port and can handle 3.x or 2.0 speeds.

USB Type-C is a connector, not a USB standard. While USB-C is associated with USB 3.2, it is technically independent of connector type. So, yes, the port in the glovebox is a Type-C, but it can support many standards.

Gear Guard records to onboard internal storage doesn’t it? It’s Road Cam that can save driving footage to attached drive I thought. In the R1 even a thumb drive with 400 mb/s r/w works. Size is just a matter of your personal preference.

Yeah in my glove box in the R2, I currently have the SSD Drive, and 2 A2Z adapters in their cases, I have a Tesla Wall Charger at home, but own a condo that has a CCS charger down by the pool and charge there if needed, and also near the condo is a Rivian RAN, which currently only has CCS. Was super easy when I had the R1T, now will need these adapters...

It is USB C in the glove box, I also believe 2 USB C in the center console, but it is nice to have the drive out of there, and in the Glove box...

I suspect the size constraints are if it is a thumb drive form factor and is to prevent it from interfering with the side/top of the glove box. An ssd with a cable could be any size really.

does anyone have a clear picture of the center console usb-c ports? Trying to figure out best solution for a HD and cabling. A couple of youtube videos show people using a Samsung T7 Shield HD.

Personally, I plan to use a thumb drive to avoid having a cable and hard drive rattling around.

When did you get your R2, and I'm assuming you picked it up in SC?
