It's hardware based. Kyle has a video where he interviews a Rivian employee who shows the hardware.
Were 100% sure about this because the notes on the latest bata have a fair amount of update to the suspension software.

I am also sure they won't be replaceable with a Gen 1 car since they changed the harness and plug connections. It would be cool if they offered an adaptor, and it worked on all generations.

Just remember the QM large has a significantly longer warranty than any other Rivian produced or in production. I drove in my parents' R1S today on 22's in same suspension mode as my R1T and the ride is slightly worse but that a wheelbase issue that I don't think suspension can solve. I have seen talk the suspension is "changed" but no one has said what has changed... If it's software based, then it will come to Gen 1...
I love how people think the warranty is "significantly" longer. It's, like, 5 months for me....

If I were you I'd wait to hear about Gen 2's range when towing. The "Large" pack is much smaller in Gen 2. Supposedly the vehicle is much more efficient so that range is the same. But that won't help much when you're towing. You might want the extra 22 kWh.
This, to me, is the largest issue. If you're going to tow a good amount, nothing beats kWh capacity. The G2 large pack's significantly lower capacity is the biggest downgrade in G2.

A few new demo trucks were just listed this morning, so I'm tempted to switch to one of them solely for that reason. I go back and forth on the residual value issue, as since this is a quad and selling at $15-20k below MSRP, that should counteract the value loss due to model year.
If you’re talking about the R1T (I assume you are because you said truck here) I would definitely get the quad. If you’re getting an R1S I’d get the newer dual. The suspension in the gen 1 T is already really good and the extra power is significant. The demo is probably also before they started cost cutting by removing outlets / etc.

In high milage cars it is significant. Go and price out the cost to add that much extra coverage...

BTY its 1 more year and 10K extra miles for all parts and 25k more miles for pack and drive units. that is significant. That equates out to a 20% increase in parts and `18% on pack and motors.

Apparently in this upcoming update a lot of suspension improves are coming for G1.
