I feel like a lot of people getting their first ever truck in the R1T would probably be better served with an SUV. Frankly, any time I see a RTT mounted over a truck bed, that's what I think.
At least twice a week a consider getting a box to put on the cross bars...then I realize I dont' want to deal with the pain of taking that box off every time I wanted to use the bed for larger things. Even my cross bars stay in my garage now because I got tired of putting them on and off.

The dust is why I decided to NOT get the tonneau cover.
I really like having a tonneau , but I just wish it was better.

Maybe the reworked version of it will be better or maybe an after-market one will come on that will be better.

My only real regret with the tonneau cover is trying to spell it. I can't fathom how one remembers how to spell it. :)

At any rate, I do think the Rivian trucks will do a thriving business for whoever makes the bed extender like this:
I find this especially funny since getting an RTT was one of the first things I did.

I kept thinking if I had the SUV version then I wouldn't need this silly tent.

In any case I was really torn between getting the truck or the SUV. I liked the styling of the Truck, and I never had a truck before. With the SUV I liked the fact that it wasn't as long, but I didn't like the styling. I also didn't want 3 rows.

A little context for everyone, I see many people assuming.......

I'm 50, I learned how to drive at 10 in a rural area with a F150 1980 with a perkins diesel engine that we have to fix ourself.

My business is not moving things Like furniture or construction stuff.

I have many pickup trucks the last 30 years and I still have a Toyota Hilux 4 doors, short bed (5feet) 4x4 diesel back in the country side house, that I drive in the summers........

I love2 wheels motorsports and cycling..... I go up and down with my bikes, and for that I have a Ford Transit Diesel 2015, low roof, long wheelbase....xtl That I use to carry my toys, family and friends..... The Volvo to add a little sport and luxury to the mix when I need to do a quick trip.

I have the impression that with the Rivian I will replace the Volvo (for the luxury) and the ford transit (for hauling ) and be happy with it......

The R1T is a solution to some of my needs with some compromises, no big of a deal..... I will keep the transit and see how it goes. (I still have my reservation for the R1S)

My 2 cents for the engineering team.

2 Inches more of bed depth..... 6 more inches of bed length (taking out the tounneou system and redesigning the back door without increasing the length of the truck) and 1 or 2 inches on each side of the interior bed , will increase the usability a lot.

Like to see you put a washer and dryer in your SUV. I think Lowes and home Depot deliver for free or about 30 bucks... You are not or have not owned a truck.

It's okay. You should see the shit that can fit in our Highlander. My R1T should be ashamed....
That was part of my decision with the truck vs the SUV. I can open the tonneau and stick a lot of crap in there without worrying about scratching or cleaning out the interior of my (coincidentally) Volvo with no height restrictions. I've used the backseat of the R1T as needed, and have also shoved a bunch of stuff under the tonneau when closed.

I feel like a lot of people getting their first ever truck in the R1T would probably be better served with an SUV. Frankly, any time I see a RTT mounted over a truck bed, that's what I think.
I keep pondering this when thinking about the SUV, and I keep coming back to the truck with an RTT is a better option for me at least. I shove a bunch of stuff in the trunk under the tonneau with the RTT over the bed. The RTT doesn't impact the range of my truck as far as I can tell, and I don't have to empty the truck bed to sleep in it. Whereas with the R1S I'd either have to make a platform to hide stuff under that I slept on, or empty the R1S each night. Which I don't really want to do. I also use the tailgate for a cooking platform while camping. I would feel like I have to carry an extra table with the R1S as well.

This is obviously assuming you don't want to sleep on a ground tent or in a hammock.

2 Inches more of bed depth..... 6 more inches of bed length (taking out the tounneou system and redesigning the back door without increasing the length of the truck) and 1 or 2 inches on each side of the interior bed , will increase the usability a lot.
I get your overall point, but I also don't really agree. Personally I wouldn't have wanted the truck to be another 6 inches long, and I haven't seen a situation where 6 additional inches would routinely make a big difference for me in what I stick in the bed. Different people obviously have different preferences, hence traditionally trucks come with multiple bed sizes.

Now that you mention the height under the cover, it reminds me of last year. I was visiting family and my brother-in-law had his Sierra with him. I was surprised how little we could fit under the tonneau he has in that. I haven't explicitly compared the two, but I don't feel like the R1T has a meaningfully shorter bed. If at all.

The pickup you want is made by GM then where you can get a mid gate. With a mid gate and a cap you’ll be able to get an SUV like space.

The decision on pickup vs SUV comes down to what you’re looking to transport. This R1T bed has been fine for me to move a piano, a couch, a tractor none of which would work in the R1S.

But if I had to take my family of 4 and my 2 70lb dogs to the vet? The R1T fails. You really have to evaluate what your most common use case.

A trailer makes a great substitute for a pickup bed, especially for occasional use. But it’s a pain in the butt to hook and unhook on a regular basis.
I like the GMC, but would like it better if it made by Rivian....

New GMC Sierra Denali EV has a folding midgate that provides a total of 9 feet for long stuff. Finally we are starting to see some innovation!

Innovation from 2001! The Avalanche had the same midgate functionality.

I have a day-one reservation on the Chevy but totally missed the GMC release. I would happily take the GMC over Chevy!
