I don't tow very often, but towed a small U-Haul trailer back from San Diego to Denver over the weekend. I haven't kept up with the latest towing news, but I was able to use hands free ADAS and automatic lane changes on my 2025 R1S practically the entire drive - the only time automatic lane changes have been disabled has been when the trailer's unloaded. Hands free ADAS has been offered for over 1,000 towing miles now. I thought this was a great new feature the whole time, but after reviewing the manual it seems this likely a glitch (decided to crack it open after it showed a bicyclist tailgating me at 40+ mph tonight while towing).

I know it initially detected a trailer since I hooked it up while I was in conserve mode - and it forced me to change to all purpose and lowered the vehicle. It also reduced the range and would not allow me to re-enter conserve mode. It automatically selected trailer 1 on the trailer profile, but it still has not loaded the estimated weight, estimated range, or any other info on the trailer info screen (hooked up since Saturday and towed it 1200 miles since then). I’ve also unhooked it and hooked it back up a couple of times over the last 2 days.

I probably wouldn't have been as comfortable with a larger trailer, but the vehicle did really great with the ADAS features and the trailer. It really made my drive so much easier and relaxing then the move out last year. The automatic lane changes, while not flawless, were really good (about 2 or 3% aborted because it though ti saw someone in the new lane at the last min - surely the trailer.). It also handled curves really well until it got to Glenwood Canyon - then I took over from there (it was a bit aggressive for my liking). The system is certainly capable of safely operating ADAS with a trailer - would be nice to see this glitch become a feature.

Charging while towing also continues to get easier. I love how practically every new Tesla station comes with a trailer pull through. Even the new Grand Junction one in the middle of a tight shopping center parking lot has a pull through (I think it's the only one in Junction, the RAN there doesn't as I recall?).

Also - heads up if you use the Rivian dog bowls while traveling. The bottom pops up coming from sea level to altitude, exploding dog food all over the place. It made both me and the pups jump. 😂

I hope the adaptive cruise control and lane centering work on my R1T next spring when I tow my boat again. They make it so easy on the freeway.

Honestly one of the main reasons I hate towing with my Rivian. The lack of adaptive cruise, and the constant "MANUAL BRAKING WHILE TOWING" warning on the dash suck, and feels like a big step backwards from my Audi.

I can say for certain my G1 R1T did NOT allow ADAS to engage when I took my boat to storage just a week and a half ago.

Sure would be nice if they would stuff the lawyers that made the decision to not allow that into a closet and sneak the feature out to the public.

Yeah, it's one bug I'm definitely not reporting. Glad to be the recipient of a positive glitch for once. Only strange things I can think of that may have caused it would be connecting while in Conserve (my app showed conserve the entire time the trailer was connected, even though it was forced into all-purpose when connected) and the Uhaul trailer 4 pin connection had abandoned the white wire (hooked up to nothing). I assume that was the ground, but not sure.

Sounds like it thought it was in accessory mode, which will allow you to have a 4 pin plugged into the trailer light connector and still allow all the normal ADAS features. It's for bike racks and hitch hauls with lights.

I will admit I'll tell the truck my jetski and small utility trailer are accessories, just so I can use adaptive cruise and highway assist. I know enough to adjust my lane change clearance and following distance accordingly. When I do that it sometimes thinks there is a very fit bicyclist tailgating me.
