Is the document fee based on maximum allowed by the state of Illinois or state the vehicle is going to be registered in? Just want to double check since it's almost double the amount capped by the state I reside in.

Taxes and fees are based on the address at which you register the vehicle. in some states, registering a car elsewhere in order to avoid your own state’s taxes and fees is a crime.

In other states, registering in another state is a right for active duty military members who don't always get a say in where they're stationed...

I am guessing you didn't register in WA. If so, how much were you charged?

Is that what was charged to you? If it varies by state based on its registration (vs. purchase), then it should be the amount capped by the state I reside in, correct?

I have been told $200. That's the most I have had to paid the last few vehicles I purchased. How much were you charged?

Edited to add: Just looked this up on dor.wa.gov.

How much can the dealer charge for a document service fee?
  • Effective July 26, 2009, a dealer can charge up to $150.
  • Effective July 1, 2022, a dealer can charge up to $200.

I don't remember right off hand (I'll look it up later) but it really doesn't matter for us. Since WA is a bunch of hypocritical a**holes when it comes to 'consumer protection', we can't legally purchase a new Rivian in WA State... All sales take place in Illinois, meaning we aren't protected by the existing consumer protection laws, including the Doc fee cap and the Lemon Law.

$225 which was later refunded because I got the MCO and registered myself. Turned out the company never did a thing with mine after 3 months so Rivian sent it to me. This was June 2022 though, very different conditions.

Edited to correct amount, I looked at the wrong spot.

FWIW, it's all lumped together, Rivian doesn't break it down.
"Vehicle License, Registration, Transfer, and Titling Fees"
On my purchase summary, it's listed out separately.

Thanks. I guess it's not based on WA rules/laws since you paid more than what was allowed. Perhaps since the transaction is technically based in Illinois, that's what they are basing it on. For states that allow direct sales, then it's whatever stipulated by that state's rules/laws.

In WA we are not buying in-state, we are purchasing in IL then registering in WA. Doc fee for my R1T was $225, and WA law doesn't apply in this case because the sale is in IL.
