I am seeing some awesome custom work and literally the only thing the R1T doesn’t have that I may want is a “mid gate” with access through the rear from the bed to the gear tunnel.
I was thinking this may be a way to climate control the bed or a tent in the bed using the truck. For here in AZ we sometimes need some ac to camp overnight and I imagined keeping the truck with the gear tunnel access open, mid gate open, and air passing through.
Also an midgate provides extra space for longer items in the bed. Also maybe some items too large for the gear tunnel door could be stored this way.

Can a custom mid gate be made? Would there be a hit to the structural integrity of the truck to have that pass through hole there?
Has anyone tried anything similar in a different truck?

I do realize it would be different then the Chevy and not extend all the way into the cab, and there are not rear seats that fold forward.

Here are some pictures of the midgate on the upcoming Chevy just for reference.

The cabin is vented into the tonneau cover space. I suppose an enterprising individual could redirect that air somehow.

The tonneau cover stacks where a mid gate would be. I suppose you could cut “doors” into the front and back of that compartment so air could flow when the tonneau is closed.

You can technically do *anything* with enough money. Whether you want to start carving up your brand new $90k truck putting openings where they didn’t exist before and modifying your rear seats is another matter. I bet some enterprising fabricator out there will gladly take your money to try.

I think you'd be better off getting a portable AC and using the truck power.

I have one of these and a fresh box of blades.

I can promise that when I’m done that climate controls from the cabin will have an effect on the gear tunnel and the bed.

I can not promise the tonneau will be operational. Nor that the cabin will be waterproof, wind proof, noise isolated, or that you’ll still have rear seats.
