The answer is pretty easy to understand. They haven't been experimenting on their driver base like Tesla does, since you're using them as a comparison. Rivian has still been taking in all of the driving data.
They have. The released their own driving update with their own lane centering. And it is a downgrade from what they had before which was already not good

They just did it "quietly" because they made a video 5 months ago which made it sound like this was their own driving 5 months ago

Now we see their real driving and as a surprise to no one, it is worse

I don't know why anyone expected rivian to release their own driving and it not be a regression

When tesla switched from mobileye 10 years ago their driving was not good. And the mobileye system they used was 50% tesla already. They just had to work around patents

ping-ponging seems like a fundamental latency issue. Where you turn your steering wheel too late to match the road curve and all of the sudden the car is in a different spot from where you initially planned. You keep correcting the steering (ping ponging) until you end up centered. Same with crossing over the lines. It's not an issue of seeing the lines but planning wrong

That's why I'd think they are pretty far if they have these basic problems

Rivian is training compute limited and they are also collecting and training on videos at low framerate. It's very clear this is not enough.

look at the chinese systems with large compute clusters, 5000 employees, etc. Look how fast they have been able to progress
