Standard doesn't even exist yet.....
It's actually available in the R1 shop. Delivery in 1-6 weeks. People are suggesting it's not the LFP batteries though.

Or maybe it's just the logical next step to create growth and additional momentum? Not all motives are negative. Do you get out of bed each morning always because you have to? Did you conclude the same when Tesla first offered leasing??

In the last few weeks Rivian did the following for R1S in fairly quick succession:
1. Open shop to general public
2. Leasing
3. Drop in lease price
4. Releasing Standard+ for free

I’m guessing there’s a real mismatch between supply and demand at current prices. Personally im going to hold out until things stabilize, as it feels that these demand levers haven’t/won’t do enough to hold them over until R2 release. I’ve been burnt by Tesla on the MY discount fiasco before and don’t want a round 2.
Rivian is approaching a bridge period where people know there will be a cheaper Rivian coming up, which means people may just wait. Riv is making a concerted effort to get folks waiting for the higher end of the R2 to just go ahead and pull the trigger now on an R1. It may have just worked on me.

I'm in the same boat. Tesla MY discounting has actually forced me to delay getting my R1S. I think Rivian's post price increase prices are way too high. I've always maintained pre-price increase or slightly above that is the sweet spot where these will sell incredibly well. (To be clear I say this as a customer, fan of the brand and as shareholder)

Rivian is running ads on Instagram, YT, etc... I do think they are not hitting the delivery numbers they were hoping for. Plus the unveil of the R2 next month to gain a bunch of reservation cash, it'll be interesting to see if they can turn profitable.

It's a great time to get in a 3y lease as well. R2 should be pretty well ramped when your lease expires.

Rivian will be facing a demand problem until the R2 series goes into production.

Here's my two cents. We have several things going on here.

One we have an uncertain economic climate which is causing folks to defer large purchases.

Two. We have fairly high interest rates which make the cost of borrowing much higher. Which puts further pressure on folks to defer large purchases.

There is a lot of negative press around EVs right now which is scaring some folks.

And lastly, we are in a very slow time of year. Traditionally for auto sales. These are the slowest months.

There are some really good auto loan calculators online and if you go on there and plug in 10%, he'll very quickly see how costly it can be to borrow, especially if you don't have a significant down payment.

Bonus is we have the hint that rates may come down soon. Like in the next few months. So just putting myself in the mind of someone who's going to finance vehicle. I might want to wait a few months to see if I can get a better rate and better terms versus pulling the trigger now.

I expect things to improve at least a bit in April May timeframe.

And the insurance crisis isn't helping either. Many folks are seeing their home and Auto insurance rates skyrocket.

Rivian needs to bring back the explore trim, or sell a version of R1T with traditional suspension on the lower end in the 60k range to tide them over to R2. The trucks are worth every penny that Rivian is asking... The problem is the pool of buyers in those price ranges is too small to maintain demand.... Especially with all the other factors I mentioned. I expect we will see some incentives if demand doesn't pickup the way they want.
