Hi wondering if anyone can offer their insight:
I bought the R1T June 30th this year from Normal, IL where I used to live, then moved to OC September 1
Now trying to register my vehicle and I’m confused by two things:
1- why do I need to pay another sales tax? (R1T was a trade in? In Illinois they tax you the difference in vehicle cost when you trade in)
2- do I include that Rivian is a licensed California dealer? I see the out of state option vs Cali dealer?
3- the total of fees when i select out of state dealer is close to $5000, they haven’t put into mind the Illinois trade in tax difference?! Is the information im putting into the fee calculator on the dmv website incorrect??

any insight is much appreciated.

Did you leave out some details? Was this vehicle titled and registered in Illinois? If so, then you're just tranfering registration and you will get credit for the sales tax you paid in Illinois. It says that explicitly on the form:
https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/file/application-for-title-or-registration-reg-343-pdf/

But yes, you will end up paying the difference between the higher California sales tax and the lower Illinois sales tax. All states do something like this to prevent people from running tax evasion schemes where they purchase in a low or no tax state then "move" to CA and re-register.

thank you for your reply! yes I registered and titled the truck in Illinois, I will check the links you all mentioned. I was surprised that I need to register the r1t as a commercial truck

The rule is meant to keep CA residents from buying in places that have little or no sales tax. People were driving to Nevada to take delivery and then driving back into California 15 minutes later to avoid the sales tax.

This is a weird corner case that is not intended for your situation, but they will accept it if you offer.
