Yesterday, went to get in the car and it showed rear hatch open; I can't get it to latch closed now. I have tried a hard software reset, and endlessly fiddled with trying to get it to latch manually and via touchscreen. Any ideas on how to use the car until service appt? (1 month out). I'm considering bungeeing it closed with some suction cups to the window.

I've only ever had this happen when the tailgate wasn't adequately closed. Open the tailgate fully and shut it again.

If that doesn't work, see if you can use a screwdriver to force the hatch latch closed. After doing that, try to open it again with the button under the liftgate.

I had tried closing the tailgate several times before trying to close the top gate...

Thanks so much for the explanation; I used a screwdriver to gently move the latch into the 'latched' position... and now everything works again. I didn't realize how the mechanism worked; thank you!!!!!!!!

You were able to manually close the latch with the liftgate down? I'm awaiting a mobile service appointment for this same issue. I currently have the liftgage bungeed to one of the tethers with the liftgate trim popped off, so I could find a something to attach the bungee cord to. I also tried soft and hard reset as well as giving the liftgate a little push at the closing. Back in the winter I had the same problem until I removed the smallest bit of ice buildup around the edge where the liftgate seals, but there is no obstruction currently causing this that I can find. Also, right after purchase, this happened, and the mobile service came out with some new liftgate mounting brackets they replaced in minutes which fixed the problem. The faulty brackets are a known issue in the R1S they said.

I'm curious if the automatic latching motor is working now though.
