To let a driver know that they screwed up (like yesterday when someone entered a traffic circle (roundabout) right in front of me and I had the right of way
If they were able to enter it before you, then they had the right of way I believe. Regardless, this reason for using a horn can start to get subjective, and people start using it to voice their opinion of how they think someone should personally drive, not to notify them of any traffic violation.

  • To get Gear Guard recording should something happen
My external hard drive is always recording. The horn needs to be hit with a certain amount of force also, otherwise it does not start recording. It would be most consistent to hit the record icon in top left corner of the center screen in the moment. Both options detract from full control of your vehicle though.

  • As mentioned above, a couple taps on blind corners to let someone know I'm coming
I'll give you that. I'll give you your first two points too, tbh, nothing is absolute. I just think horns rarely fix the problem in the moment, and that's the only reason I would want to use it.

Thanks - I'm getting ready to do that upgrade in our R1S. When we get our R2 I guess I'll need to drive with the window down and my left hand on one of these...

Or you could hire a trumbone player and do this:

I actually just did a comparison if anyone wants to hear them side by side. (R2 and R1)
The R2 horn sounds quite loud in person, you can tell it’s a little different than a traditional horn but I like it a lot more than the puny R1 horn, which I think almost rises to the level of cruel joke on all R1 owners.

Rivian R2 horn vs R1 horn

People are conflating loudness and pitch. The R2 is higher pitched, which stands apart from background noise of driving better than the lower pitched R1 horn. Jeff Hammoud said as much in Carmudgeon podcast. One is better representation of “alarm!”. While the other is more like a lazy casual, “ oh hey there”, which is inadequate for a warning device. Willing to bet swapping the R1’s single 300 Hz to a 400 will yield improvement (but just as easy to add as second).

I'll apologize if this is already out there somewhere (my search didn't find anything)...

After I did my test R2 drive in King of Prussia (PA), I was talking to the staff in the Rivian Space. I forgot to try it on my test run, so I asked them if the horn in the R2 was better than what we have in our '23 R1S. The guy got a sheepish look and told me that the R2 doesn't have a horn: It has a speaker!!!

He explained that's what Tesla does as well - that didn't make me feel any better. Please tell me that if it's a speaker instead of a real horn that we can at least play music out of it when we're in camping mode...

@Dark-Fx - Bonus points awarded if you compare the horn on the R2 against your T (which I'm assuming has the original dual horns) and the S (which I'm assuming has the single horn like mine).
It seems fine from inside. Very slight delay

Some reviewers have said it sounds digital or like what AI thinks a horn sounds like (ie artificial or fake).
It doesn't sound bad to me in the videos posted above, but it might be one of those things that's hard to judge online because a digital recording of a digital of recording of a horn doesn't necessarily sound much different than a digital recording of a horn.

I've seen the same thing when I look at digital simulations of mechanical devices like analog watches or VU meters online (Apple Watch or the McIntosh system that Jeep offers for example). They look pretty nice in pictures but are much more obviously fake when you experience them in person.
