If they actually meet their prediction of 150k R2 per year, then there will be plenty available on their shop eventually. Similar to the Gen 2 R1S.Makes me almost want to trade in my gen1 for a gen2….almost.
I believe they're doing extensive edge-case tracking and logging to train the model to behave appropriately. If you haven’t watched the event, this is addressed at some point by James Philbin, Rivian’s Autonomy VP.Nice video. I watched at double speed, so it seemed pretty exciting!
As far as I could tell, the system didn't slow down for parked vehicles that aren't in the traffic lanes. That's a strategy that works until it doesn't.
As the vehicle that's passing a stopped vehicle, I've seen doors open when I didn't expect, and people (sometimes little people) or pets emerge when I didn't expect. Not cool.
That's just one of many ways that autonomous driving can hurt people. Programmers need to program for this. Even then, I don't want to be one of the first to rely on the platform.
Best to all!
Totally true, but for every edge case like this that might get missed there is also an opportunity for the computer to catch things the person who is tired or not paying attention misses. We’ve all seen our fellow drivers miss the mark in major ways. I see that daily.Nice video. I watched at double speed, so it seemed pretty exciting!

Wait for the gen 3Makes me almost want to trade in my gen1 for a gen2….almost.
Perhaps, but also, bad drivers cause edge cases.I think there are more bad drivers than edge cases.
oh I agree. Plan is to get a gen3 and then my youngest son can have my gen1.Wait for the gen 3
My AEB has never activated in the Rivian, I've gotten the warning once or twice but it never applied the brakes. I had it activated once in my Audi, and it was because I wasn't paying attention. It saved me from rear-ending someone at about 50MPH. Even decent drivers are sometimes the problem because humans aren't perfect.Perhaps, but also, bad drivers cause edge cases.
I've had emergency braking activate more times when unnecessary than it saved me from actually getting in an accident. I'd say there's really only one time I've legitimately been saved by AEB, and it would have been a very low speed crash. Guy in front of me started going at a green, so I started to follow, looked down for a moment and the brakes locked up. No reason for that person to have stopped again, but they did.
