To my understanding, lidar can do both - it can store things for datasets to be shared, but is also useful for real-time situations for the vehicle using it to react to things.

Where do people get the notion that LIDAR is only for gathering data? Has there been a definitive statement from Rivian on the subject? Sounds more like crowd-sourced rumors to me than hard facts.

Journalism 101 - Your mother says she loves you? Check it.
They've stated that initially the LiDAR use case is largely for data collection. They haven't talked about how useful LiDAR will be on a daily basis soon after it is launched. So somewhere between less useful to not useful at all since they haven't talked about it at that level. They've only said that it's needed for level 4 down the road.

It's a $200 to $300 LiDAR so i'm not sure how much I can really expect out of it anyways. Some cars have like 6 LiDARs.

AS stated in a number of interviews with Rivian "bigwigs".
Those interviews state that the LIDAR will benefit the data gathering they will get from those vehicles being on the road. Still, that doesn't mean it won't serve other functions as well.

Here is this piece from these forums. A person sat down with the engineers at Rivian after the self-driving event recently where they made clear that the LIDAR will be used in those edge cases where cameras and radar (sonar depending on which generation car your using?) are not going to make the personal Level 4 self driving as good. It may only add an additional 1 percent considering how good the gear is without it, but clearly there are serious benefits in multiple situations where theRAP 1 chip is going to make a measurable difference. As far as I'm concerned, when my car is driving itself, I'll take the edge cases.
