If I sell my IPO shares now my post-IPO shares will cover the loss plus 5k. Very tempting.
Just curious why you would do that.

If you just hang onto them you can strategically offset capital gains with the loss. I would hang onto them and wait until I had the capital gains to offset before I sold them. Kind of a win/win, you would know what gains to offset before selling and you might get more for them when time to sell.

What am I missing?

just simplicity and clearing my screen of my late night IPO mania. We have ample tax loss harvesting each year from our managed accounts so the 9k or so the IPO shares would account as a loss is a rounding error.
