Run high power 12v off jumper cables?

Sorry very poor internet to search this first. Anyone tried running something like a good backup 12V air pump that normally needs direct battery connection using alligator clips off of the 12V jumper cables next to the tow hitch? Also, curious if it will quickly drain the small 12V battery or if it knows to maintain that battery when doing this … maybe needs to be in Neutral or similar so that it’s fully awake to keep it charged? Just not sure if an high external power draw will mess with things in general as not sure this was ever intended.

Why not? In theory, the electrons should flow to your device, the car should sense the voltage sag in the 12v battery and engage the DC to DC charger.
It would be unusual to have a diode in the jumper cables. Should work both ways. Also, the 12v bms should keep the battery charged.
