That is no longer the case. We are in the midst of a battery revolution. Check out CATL specs on their sodium ion battery.
IF the company can be believed, and they've shown a track record of over-inflating their claims. Once it hits the market and can be verified, don't believe what they say.

And this was from CATL yesterday...
CATL stated that the energy density of sodium-ion batteries is slightly lower than that of lithium-ion batteries, but they have advantages in low-temperature performance, carbon footprint, and safety. The energy density of the new sodium battery has reached 175Wh/kg

With ignition runaway no longer a factor and sodium ion able to perform at substantial temperature ranges the weight of thermal management hardware is greatly reduced making room for additional cells if desired. There is so much R&D happening right now it will be exciting to see what the near future brings to the EV industry.

I've read that quite the opposite is true and that CTL tends to project reasonable expectations and often over performs. However, podcasters and news outlets create a lot of over zealous predictions regarding the industry. There are hundreds of billions of dollars being thrown at battery development worldwide, but unfortunately the US is pushing for more fossil fuel dependence. If sodium ion technology meets the expectations it will be a global energy game changer.

I watch/read Volts and Rocky Mountain Intitute for bleeding edge information on renewables including the transportation sector. I avoid the mainstream hype and garbage. They both put out very interesting information on where things are going, and have interviews with scientists and innovators.

I am curious as to what Rivian‘s position is to the inevitable future of sodium ion batteries. Half the cost, 3 to 4 times the longevity, higher density, no thermal runaway, and incredibly higher temperature range while keeping over 80% of his power.
I know next to nothing about battery tech, but I do know about the words "inevitable future"...

Solid state will probably beat sodium for vehicles. And solid state is minimum 5 years out more likely 10+
Then at least 3+ years to integrate into an existing model.
