Good guess, but as I mentioned the signal is very strong and I get 200Mbps+ on my phone while sitting in the car.
Getting 200mbps doesn’t in and of itself reflect signal strength it’s just how much bandwidth the device can push, signal strength (or loss) is measured in db

if you pay for a 200mb package and get 200mb on your phone in the garage I would agree it’s strong, but if you’re paying for 1gb and getting 200mb in the garage then it’s an indicator the signal is weak, especially if the ping is over 30ms

I found that I needed to use 2.4GHz even when I had an AP in my garage and the signal was only passing through one wall. Since I put an AP outside it will finally use 5GHz, but the signal is still kind of spotty even with line of sight to the AP. I think the wifi antenna on the truck is just too weak or poorly placed for a 5GHz network. But you don't need much throughput anyway.

Just talked to Rivian support - they claim that the car supports 2.4Ghz only.

Just got the car, and the first thing is ... can't connect to home WiFi. Great experience... in addition to a broken wireless charging pad in the center console.
In the WiFi settings, I see all possible networks but not the 5GHz, specifically looking for the mesh node since the base router is quite far and the signal is too weak.

My setup.
Router: ASUS GT-AXE16000
Nodes: ASUS 2x ZenWiFi Pro ET12
all of them are tri-band (2.4GHz, 5GHz, 6GHz)
5GHz SSID: three letters like "AnB"
5GHz Security: WPA2-PSK-CCMP
2.5GHz SSID: "AnB-2.4"
2.4GHz Security: WPA2-PSK-CCMP
6GHz SSID: "AnB-6"
6GHz Security: WPA3

I have no issue with connecting to wifi mesh on any other device, and my phone gets 200+ MBps (5GHz) from inside the parked car.
I can connect to 2.4GHz from the car, but it's already too "crowded" due to security cameras.

I don't know if it's a problem with Rivian software or perhaps hardware.
Has anyone had a similar issue?
Any further resolution?

I just tested by changing the name of my 2.4 GHz. network to something Rivian specific but the car still can’t see it or manually connect to it. My phone in the car can see it and connect to it.

Edit: Resolved by disabling WPA(1) security and telling my router to only use WPA2. Now the car can see the network.

FIXED: R1S Gen2 Wi-Fi Connection Issue (eero + UniFi Setup)

Just wanted to share what worked for me in case it helps someone else. My 2025 R1S Gen2 was refusing to connect to my home Wi-Fi network—a problem I saw quite a few others were experiencing.

After trying a bunch of the common suggestions, here’s what finally worked:

Steps:
  1. Go to Settings > Connect > Wi-Fi > Manage Networks
  2. Delete your home network
  3. Go back to Settings > Connect > Wi-Fi
  4. Re-add your home network
  5. Enter your network password when prompted
After doing this, my R1S connected immediately and has stayed connected since.

My home network setup (for context):
  • ISP: Frontier Fiber
  • Optical Network Terminal (ONT) as modem
  • Router: eero Pro 7
  • Access Points: Ubiquiti Networks UniFi PoE
Hope this saves someone else the same frustration I had troubleshooting it!

Gen 1 should be able to see 5 GHz as well, personally haven't tried. Gen 1 had 2 Wi-Fi antennas, front and rear, where Gen 2 only has the rear.

This is from my 2023 Gen 1
