So if the "gas" door doesn't close, the car doesn't drive. I once drove with a loose gas cap and I'm lucky to be alive!

Seems like the same as if the main doors aren't closed it just goes back into park every time you want to move the car. Sometimes I'm shocked that it drives with the windows rolled down and you can hang your arms outside. Seems super sketch to allow that.

Kudos to Rivian for fixing it though.

If the car has sufficient charge why is the owner not able to move the car with this fault?
I would have asked that of Rivian as they are the ones who made it work that way.

For some of these issues which render the vehicle immobile, it seems like there should be an on-screen override process. For hood, door, gear tunnel door not closed present the driver with a message along the lines of, “By using this override I agree that I have physically verified that the <item indicated as open> is closed, latched, and will not present a danger. I assume responsibility for any damage or injury caused by using this override if the <item indicated as open> is not properly secured.

Use of this override will create a service ticket with this acknowledgment. A Rivian Service employee will contact you to schedule a service appointment to correct this problem.”

Likewise for a charging error, “By using this override I agree that I may be unable to charge until the vehicle is serviced by Rivian and I may end up stranded as a result.

Use of this override will create a service ticket with this acknowledgment. A Rivian Service employee will contact you to schedule a service appointment to correct this problem.”

I really don’t understand why a connected vehicle with as much diagnostic and logging capability as our Rivians is making people submit tickets. At a bare minimum, when there are critical errors which immobilize the vehicle put a message on the center display which give the driver the option of calling Rivian service or automatically creating a ticket with the relevant diagnostic information attached.

edit: typo and formatting

The funny thing is that the example you list, i.e., gas cap not installed, does throw a fault. It can, in fact, result in check engine light and the engine not starting. I realize that the intent of the comment was to show how silly or 'over-the-top' the ramifications are of trivial issues but it is interesting that you picked this example.

Alas, we now live in a world where software is interpreting every little bit and byte of data and coming to traumatic conclusions when something unexpected occurs. Long gone are the days where you could just stuff a rag into the gas tube if you lost (or someone stole) your gas cap. (If you're old like I am, you remember having to remove the gas cap and place it on the pump. Amazing how many times you'd pull up to a pump and see a gas cap that someone had left there)

Federal requirement for the vehicle to be immobilized while plugged in. If it looks like it's plugged in but something isn't right about it, they probably have to err on that side of the requirements.

That makes sense.

But still never had a loose gas cap strand me or prevent a car from driving. In fact I don't know of any obd codes that when tripped result in the car refusing to drive. I guess there are some limp mode stuff though they are serious mechanical maladies.
