As a mechanic one of my biggest qualms with rivian so far is the lack of 3rd party/diy repair support. To a certain extent I can get why, the high voltage systems can be very dangerous. And if hate to have billy Bob from the trailer park going in there with wire nuts and tinsnips. But if EVs are going to be adopted, diyers and enthusiasts are going to start doing repairs. Whether they have the certificate, service info, OEM parts, or not.

Came across this article showing an autel scanner has an adas alignment and calibration package that has been approved by rivian.

So far it looks like this is just for driver+ errors after body work, but uses autels ultra tablet scan tool. This device is much more expensive than the Bluetooth dongles from Amazon, but is available to the general public. One of my coworkers just bought this tablet so I may ask him what all it shows available for rivian.

This is evidence that a traditional scan tool has the hardware to talk to the rivian. The limits are in the software. This is a big step in the right direction, even if it's still a little out there price wise. This is especially big that it is autel and not one of the tool truck guys.

I know I am in a very small minority here. But this type of stuff has been my biggest hurdle with purchasing a rivian or most other EVs. I would see myself keeping a rivian well past warranty so long as I can keep it going. It's kinda my way of being green, keeping vehicles out of the scrap heap.

Anybody know if other 3rd party scanners or tools? Maybe it's time I dive back into software development and see what I can come up with.

Does the Autel have a QR scan function? If so, the RiDE service menu has a QR for accessing service info.

That's a great question. I know it has a camera and I believe can scan barcodes for reading vins, so I don't see why not. Bigger thing would be if rivian lets it in without a subscription or something. Really that's most of what would stop any scan tool.

Completely agree with you. We spoke with someone at https://www.axiomtoolco.com about Rivian coverage recently. They said the only tool they had that was capable of rivian coverage currently was the autel tool. He said that Snap On / John bean was Rivian approved for Adas calibrations but those are the only 2 as of now. The other scan tool manufacturers will most likely add Rivian Coverage eventually, especially if rivian continues to grow. Most of the leading scan tools offer Tesla coverage, well eventually get there with rivian. It just takes time to develop the software.
